The Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) today issued its Annual Report to the President and Congress for Fiscal Year (FY) 2023, highlighting efforts across the Federal Inspector General (IG) community to conduct effective government oversight and generate significant returns for the American public.
The Inspector General Act of 1978, as amended, requires CIGIE to prepare and transmit a report annually to the President and Congress on CIGIE’s activities. Among many highlights, this year’s Annual Report notes, in FY 2023, the Federal IG community collectively:
- identified potential savings to Federal programs and operations totaling over $93 billion;
- issued 2,217 audit, inspection, and evaluation reports; and
- conducted investigations that resulted in 4,318 criminal prosecutions and 1,106 civil actions.
The report also details CIGIE’s efforts to meet its strategic goals, describes the support CIGIE’s standing committees provide to the Federal IG community, and includes additional collective data on the Federal IG community’s audit and investigative accomplishments.
“There are more than 70 independent OIGs and about 14,000 OIG employees working to oversee Federal operations and detect and prevent fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct through Federal programs,” said the Honorable Mark Lee Greenblatt, CIGIE Chairperson and Inspector General of the U.S. Department of the Interior. “CIGIE is proud to contribute to and support the IG community’s collective efforts that promote responsive, accountable, and transparent government programs and operations. This report is a comprehensive summary of who we are, what we do, and how we help the American taxpayers every day.”
The report is available at Oversight.gov, a publicly accessible, searchable website containing the latest public reports from Federal OIGs, who are members of CIGIE.
