We recently co-hosted an event about the "time tax." That's the time lost to red tape and paperwork when applying for benefits—like pandemic unemployment insurance and stimulus checks.
Here's what our panelists had to say:
Julia Simon-Mishel, a supervising attorney at Philadelphia Legal Assistance, on the three new federal unemployment insurance programs.
Nina Olson, the Executive Director of the Center for Taxpayer Rights, on getting stimulus checks.
Pamela Herd, professor of public policy at Georgetown University, on how the government has made processes easier in some programs.

Here are some not so fun facts.
Identity theft increased by 3,000 percent in 2020, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Fixing the problem is another "time tax" people have to pay.
Taxpayers have to wait 260 days for the IRS to resolve an identity theft case. And the panelists explained that because data sharing is a challenge across the government, people have to verify their identity multiple times if they get benefits from multiple agencies.
So what can the government do to save you time and protect your identity?
