Median Household Income Increased in 2023 for First Time Since 2019

Real median household income rose to $80,610 in 2023, the first annual increase since 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report released on Tuesday.

The report, Income in the United States: 2023, compares median household income by different characteristics, including race and Hispanic origin, and shows that not all groups had an increase in median household incomes from 2022 to 2023.

Household characteristics are determined by the person, or one of the people, who owns or rents the home. For example, estimates for Hispanic households represent households where one of the owners or renters is Hispanic.

The only group with higher income in 2023 was non-Hispanic White households, with an increase of 5.7% to $89,050.

Measuring the Nation's Social and Economic Well-Being 2023

The U.S. Census Bureau on Tuesday announced that real median household income increased by 4.0% between 2022 and 2023. This is the first statistically significant annual increase in real median household income since 2019. The official poverty rate fell 0.4 percentage points, to 11.1%, in 2023. The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) rate in 2023 was 12.9%, an increase of 0.5 percentage points from 2022.
