After some of the nation's most populous counties experienced significant outmigration and population declines in 2021, overall patterns of population growth and decline are moving towards pre-pandemic rates for the nationās 3,144 counties according to theĀ Census Bureauās Vintage 2022 estimatesĀ of population and components of change released last week. All 10 of the top fastest-growing counties were in the South or West.

Texas Population Passes the 30-Million Mark in 2022
Texas is now one of only two U.S. states with a population of 30 million or more: the nationās second-most-populous state reached a population milestone by passing the 30-million threshold.
Texasās population in 2022 was 30,029,572, second only to California (39,029,342), not surprising given its consistent place in recent years among the nationās fastest-growing, largest-gaining states.

Two Years Into Pandemic, Domestic Migration Trends Shifted
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the U.S. population in many ways, includingĀ births, deathsĀ andĀ international migration. One of its more intriguing impacts was on domestic migration patterns.
Some longstanding trends accelerated, such as outmigration from large urban areas in the Northeast, while other trends reversed, resulting in some small rural counties gaining rather than losing population.
