Census Bureau Launches Phase 3 Experimental Pulse Survey to Track Trends in Small Business During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Experimental Data Products

In response to the unprecedented circumstances presented by the coronavirus pandemic and the urgent need for data, the U.S. Census Bureau is launching a third phase of the experimental Small Business Pulse Survey to measure temporal economic trends in the nation’s small businesses over the next three months. Survey responses will be posted within weeks of collection and will provide insight into the scope of the effects of the pandemic on businesses with between 1-499 employees. The first results will be released on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at 10 a.m. Results will continue to be posted weekly.

The Census Bureau decided to launch Phase 3 of the Small Business Pulse Survey because the responses from the prior phases have been enormously valuable in gaining a deeper understanding about how small businesses are faring during the pandemic. Given the duration of the pandemic, there is a continued need for this information to help inform policy.
