2020 Product Calendar — The U.S. Census Bureau has posted anticipated release dates for each regular and recurring statistical product scheduled for release in 2020. These products are listed in the Census Bureau’s online product calendar, which is updated as needed throughout the year.
2020 Census
2020 Census Paid Temporary Workers — Each Tuesday, the Census Bureau will release the total number of 2020 Census paid temporary workers that earned any pay. The data tables include national totals for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. (Scheduled for release each Tuesday.)
American Community Survey
Migration Flows Data Available for Counties, Metropolitan Statistical Areas and Minor Civil Divisions ― The U.S. Census Bureau released migration statistics from the 2014-2018 American Community Survey (ACS). These data tables highlight the geographic mobility of people between counties, metropolitan statistical areas, minor civil divisions in some states, and municipalities (municipios) in Puerto Rico. The five-year data provide estimates of in-migration, out-migration and net migration of movers and nonmovers between origin and destination of these geographies. (Scheduled for release Sept. 3.)
2019 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates — The U.S. Census Bureau will release statistics on numerous demographic, social, economic and housing characteristics. These statistics include language spoken at home, educational attainment, commute to work, employment, mortgage status and rent, as well as income, poverty and health insurance coverage. Statistics will be available for geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more. Embargo subscribers can access these statistics beginning at 10 a.m. EDT, Tuesday, Sept. 15, for release at 12:01 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 17.
Commuting Patterns of Older Workers in the United States, 2013-2017 — The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to release the report “Commuting Patterns of Older Workers in the United States, 2013-2017” that describes commuting patterns of older workers in the United States, based on data from the 5-year 2013-2017 American Community Survey (ACS). Older workers are a diverse group, but understanding how their commuting behavior varies from that of younger workers helps planners and policy makers accommodate the needs of this growing share of the working population. (Tentatively scheduled for release in September.)

Aging in Africa — A new report released by the U.S. Census Bureau provides analysis of the demographic, economic, social and health characteristics of the older African population, with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa. The report, “Aging Africa: 2020,” looks at the implications for Africa as a region, sub regions and countries at present and in the future. It provides comprehensive and up-to-date statistics on current and projected future population aging trends and patterns in Africa. (Scheduled for release Sept. 2.)
Income and Poverty in the United States: 2019 — On Sept. 15, the Census Bureau will announce its findings on income and poverty for the nation based on the 2020 Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey. The report will include statistics pertaining to the 2019 calendar year and compare trends over time. (Scheduled for release Sept. 15.)
Health Insurance in the United States: 2019 — On Sept. 15, the Census Bureau will announce its findings on health insurance coverage. The report will include national-level statistics from the 2020 Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey and a table showing state-level coverage for 2018 and 2019 from the American Community Survey. It will include data for the 2019 calendar year and compare it with previous years. (Scheduled for release Sept. 15.)
The Supplemental Poverty Measure: 2019 — On Sept. 15, the Census Bureau will announce its findings on the supplemental poverty measure for the nation based on the 2020 Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey. The report will include statistics pertaining to the 2019 calendar year and compare trends over time. (Scheduled for release Sept. 15.)
American Housing Survey: 2019 — The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Census Bureau will soon release products from the 2019 American Housing Survey (AHS). On Sept. 16, the AHS Table Creator will be released with new 2019 estimates. The Table Creator is an interactive data tool that allows users to create custom tables of housing and demographic estimates for the nation, 25 metropolitan areas, and nine states. On Sept. 30, the 2019 AHS public use file and codebook will be available. The public use file is a microdata file containing individual survey records that allow users to create their own tabulations. (Scheduled for release Sept. 16.)
School Enrollment in the United States: 2018 — The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to release the report “School Enrollment in the United States: 2018” that examines the characteristics of people enrolled in school at all levels using statistics from the Current Population Survey and the American Community Survey. The report outlines the current picture of education in America from kindergarten, first through eighth grades, high school, college undergraduate and graduate students and discusses how the latest numbers compare with historical levels. (Tentatively scheduled for release in September.)
Household Pulse Survey — The experimental Household Pulse Survey is an effort by the Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies to document temporal trends in how individuals are experiencing business curtailment and closures, stay-at-home orders, school closures, changes in the availability of consumer goods and consumer patterns, and other abrupt and significant changes to American life. The Census Bureau began data collection for phase 2 on Aug. 19. Biweekly results will be available through the Household Pulse Survey Interactive Tool, detailed tables and a public use data file on the website starting Sept. 9 through Nov. 4, 2020. Phase 2 includes new questions on social security benefits, post-secondary education, evictions/foreclosures, SNAP benefits, unemployment benefits and mental health services.
Economic
Economic Census Local Area Data Release Wrap Up — The U.S. Census Bureau will wrap up release of the data from the Geographic Area Statistics reports as part of the 2017 Economic Census on Aug. 20. This series includes data for the nation and states for all covered 2- through 6- digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. Data are also available at the metro area, county, and place levels for selected NAICS sectors. Visit the economic census website for more information. (Scheduled for release Sept. 3.)
Manufacturing Workers Age Profile and Implications for Earnings — The U.S. Census Bureau and the Local Employment Dynamics (LED) Partnership, in collaboration with the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) and the Labor Market Information Institute (LMI), welcome Patrick Flaherty as he presents “Manufacturing Workers Age Profile and Implications for Earnings.” (Schedule for release Sept. 16.)
Quarterly Summary of State and Local Government Tax Revenues: Second Quarter 2020 —The summary provides quarterly estimates of state and local government tax revenue at a national level, as well as detailed tax revenue data for individual states. This report produces three tables: Tables 1 and 2 include income and sales data, and Table 3 provides tax collections by state. (Scheduled for release Sept. 17.)
2018 State and Local Government Finances Summary Report — The U.S. Census Bureau will release a summary report of the 2018 Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances. This report shows revenues, expenditures, debt, and cash and security holdings by level of government. Level of government includes state, local, and state and local combined. The statistics are organized by state. (Scheduled for release Sept. 22.)
Exploring Census Data Webinar Series: Hidden Gems Data — Census Bureau subject matter experts will provide practical ways to use our unique, hidden gems data from multiple business programs. You will learn about data from both public and private sectors of the economy and tips on how to use our geographic area statistics to enhance your data search. The webinar includes a segment on available resources and data tools with the opportunity for Q&A. (Schedule for release Sept. 22.)
Dispersion Statistics on Productivity (DiSP) —The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release a new version of the experimental data product, Dispersion Statistics on Productivity (DiSP, www.census.gov/disp), with information on productivity dispersion in the manufacturing sector. The new version of the DiSP data will provide information on within-industry dispersion in productivity at the four-digit NAICS level for 1997-2016. (Scheduled for release Sept. 23.)
2019 Annual Business Survey Data Release —The U.S. Census Bureau will release first look owner characteristics data from the 2019 Annual Business Survey (ABS). The ABS is conducted jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation. Additional economic business and owner data are scheduled to be released in winter 2020. (Schedule for release Sept. 24.)
Small Business Pulse Survey — The experimental Small Business Pulse Survey is designed to collect real-time data on how small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic inform federal and state response and recovery planning. Phase 2 includes updated content on the rehiring of laid-off or furloughed employees, work from home, use of online platforms to offer goods or services, and changes in capacity of the business. The second phase expands the federal assistance questions to include tax deferrals and credits as well as the Federal Reserve’s Main Street Lending program, and asks businesses about future program needs. Data are available through the Small Business Pulse Survey Interactive Tool and downloadable files. Results will be released weekly starting Aug. 20 through Oct. 15, 2020.
Weekly Business Formation Statistics — The U.S. Census Bureau is releasing weekly business application data at the national and regional levels in addition to releasing the quarterly Business Formation Statistics (BFS). The BFS, which was first released in February 2018, tracks trends in business applications and formations at the state, regional and national levels. The weekly data provide timely and granular information on the state of the economy but appropriate caution is required in interpreting fluctuations since high-frequency weekly data are subject to variation from seasonal factors including holidays and beginning and end of calendar year effects. The Census Bureau will publish the weekly BFS series at the national, regional and state levels each Thursday by 12 p.m. EDT.

Survey to Measure 2020 Census Online Response Satisfaction — Aug. 21 — The U.S. Census Bureau announced today the new 2020 Census User Experience Survey, a survey measuring how satisfied respondents were with their online experience with the 2020 Census questionnaire. The data collection for the online response satisfaction survey began Aug. 17 and will end in October. The 2020 Census marks the first time households have been invited to respond online using a computer, smartphone or tablet.
Over 73% of Housing Units Counted So Far in 2020 Census — Aug. 21 — This week, the U.S. Census Bureau began to release daily 2020 Census housing unit completion rates including the 2020 Census self-response rate and Nonresponse Followup completion rate. Over 73% of housing units have been accounted for in the 2020 Census as of today, with 9.7% counted by census takers and other field data collection operations, and 64.2% of housing units responding online, by phone or by mail.
Review of 2020 Census Operational Plan — Aug. 17 — Today the U.S. Census Bureau released a presentation that provides partners, stakeholders and the public updates on the 2020 Census Operational Plan. The review illustrates some of the ways we are adapting our operations to ensure a complete and accurate count by our statutory deadline December 31, 2020.
Statement from Census Bureau on Deputy Director for Data — Aug. 17 — Benjamin A. Overholt, Ph.D., is joining the U.S. Census Bureau today as the Deputy Director for Data. In this role, he will support the Census Bureau in ensuring the 2020 Census data products are of the highest quality. He is experienced in data management, data analysis and decision support.
Census Bureau Adapts Operations to Ensure Everyone Is Counted — Aug. 14 — As the U.S. Census Bureau continues to monitor the impacts COVID-19 has on 2020 Census operations, changes to operations are being deployed to ensure the safety of staff and the public while maximizing the number of households that respond on their own to the 2020 Census.

Census Bureau Releases New Report on Retail Workers — Aug. 26 — The U.S. Census Bureau will release Retail Workers: 2018, a new report on the nation’s retail workforce. Retail jobs are some of the most common occupations in the United States. This report does not reflect any possible economic impacts related to COVID-19 but instead serves as a pre-crisis benchmark for future research.
Survey of Market Absorption of New Multifamily Units (SOMA) — Aug. 20 — The U.S. Census Bureau released SOMA quarterly data on privately financed, nonsubsidized, unfurnished units in buildings with five or more units for those units constructed in the first quarter of 2020, and absorbed (Rented/Sold) in the second quarter of 2020.
Survey of Income and Program Participation Data Release — Aug. 18 — The U.S. Census Bureau released data from the 2018 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). Accompanying the data release are a number of supporting materials to assist data users, such as metadata, a codebook and an updated Users’ Guide. The Census Bureau plans to release research briefs highlighting various social and economic topics in 2020.

Census Business Builder 3.1 (CBB) — Aug. 20 — The U.S. Census Bureau released version 3.1 of both the Small Business and Regional Analyst Editions of CBB. This release updates the data included for all business programs in the tool, including the 2018 County Business Patterns and Nonemployer Statistics, the 2017 Economic Census, the 2017 Annual Business Survey, and the 2019 BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. In addition, the release adds some new data (including data on business hires by educational attainment) and the ability to view more cities/towns, ZIP Codes, and census tracts on the map.

Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) — Aug. 11 — During this observance, our nation celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Visiting Hard-to-Count Communities — Aug. 26 — Written by: Steven Dillingham, Director — Since our census takers began hitting the streets earlier this month, I wanted to put myself in their shoes and see what it takes to do their job. Before becoming a census taker for the day, I completed a virtual training, and received a mobile device and my workload. I checked in with staff at the Charlotte Area Census Office (ACO) who would be directing my work, and I conducted door-to-door operations in my hometown of Rock Hill in York County, South Carolina. While the city and county have high response rates, both have some hard-to-count pockets. My mission: to get an accurate count from households that had not yet responded to the 2020 Census.
