America Counts: Stories Behind the Numbers

A Snapshot of Fatherhood

On the eve of Father’s Day celebrations, we provide a demographic snapshot of fatherhood in the United States in an interactive visualization.

The data visualization draws on the Men’s Fertility and Fatherhood: 2014 report released this week, the first Census Bureau report to detail men’s fertility and fathering. The data come from the 2014 Survey of Income and Program Participation, Wave 1.

Explore the data visualization to learn about the share of men who are fathers, different trajectories of fatherhood, and characteristics (including age, marital status and education) that shape fatherhood.
