Country in Focus: Nigeria
View the new Country in Focus page, which now features Nigeria. With a population of about 186 million, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and 100 percent of the population is at risk of malaria infection. With support from PMI and its partners, malaria control interventions are being scaled up, and vital commodities are being distributed to vulnerable populations. The most recent national population-based survey measuring malaria program progress in Nigeria shows impressive results.
Just Released – FY 2017 Malaria Operational Plans
The fiscal year 2017 Malaria Operational Plans are now available on the PMI website. These plans were developed in collaboration with national malaria control programs and with the participation of national and international partners. They outline PMI support to national malaria control program strategic priorities and complement investments made by other partners.

Nigerian Zonal Laboratory Moves toward International Accreditation
PMI is helping to prepare Agulu zonal laboratory to receive a final accreditation audit from the American National Standards Institute ‒ American Society for Quality (ANSI‒ASQ) National Accreditation Board. Once accredited, the Agulu laboratory will play a critical role, not only in quality control of medicines in Nigeria and beyond, but also in developing the capacities of other zonal laboratories.
Smartphones Enhance Supervision
Successful indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaigns depend on close supervision to ensure safe and effective spray performance. Data generated on a daily basis enables supervisors to determine performance trends, track insecticide utilization rates, and ensure adherence to operational standards.
New Approach to IRS Reduces Costs
Indoor residual spraying (IRS) remains an effective strategy against malaria in mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. With increased insecticide resistance and the rising cost of effective insecticides, the President’s Malaria Initiative Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (PMI AIRS) Project is finding innovative ways to reduce operations costs without compromising the quality of the spray.
