Women, Climate and Food Security
While climate change affects everyone, its effects are not felt equally. Women farmers have different, and often more profound, vulnerabilities to climate change and face even greater challenges to adapt to the climate crisis. In addition to climate challenges, women in agrifood systems are battling economic and societal constraints as pointed out by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) “Status of Women in Agrifood Systems” report released earlier this year.
We need to give the women the skills and opportunity to lead; conduct research and programs designed by, with and for women; and engage men and government leaders at all levels on the potential for all to win when women advance. This is not done at the expense of others but rather has huge multiplier effects as we work towards ending hunger. As a pillar of our work, Feed the Future invests heavily in research and technology with the goal of building the resilience of women in agrifood systems because we believe that when women in agriculture are empowered, their families, communities and even entire economies benefit.
As the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) kicks off and brings together world leaders, researchers and other global partners and stakeholders in Dubai to discuss climate impacts and development, we explore the vital role women play in global agrifood systems and how climate presents specific challenges for them in this edition of the newsletter.
