JANUARY 2023
Meeting the Moment
2022 saw an unprecedented global food security crisis exacerbated by COVID-19, global conflicts, and climate change. An estimated 205 million people were in need of life-saving food assistance, and some 768 million people were chronically hungry. With so much on the line, Feed the Future doubled-down on our development investments to both mitigate the worst effects of the crisis and build more sustainable and resilient systems for the longer-term. We did this by reaching smallholder farmers with the fertilizer, seeds and information they need to stay productive. We worked with vulnerable communities to reduce the climate-driven risks they face. We supported locally-driven solutions and helped national governments adopt productive agricultural policies and programs.
With the crisis unlikely to end in the foreseeable future and the specter of an increasingly hungry world before us, Feed the Future investments are more vital than ever. In the year ahead, our partnerships will be essential in enabling smallholder farmers and their communities to overcome crisis-driven challenges with the technologies, techniques and know-how that deliver transformative impact.

Yidgiri's "ReCom" Network Increases Sales for Farmers
Burkina Faso is the second largest producer of livestock in the West African Economic and Monetary Union, but producers often are unable to reap the benefits of the country’s large meat market due to low-weight cattle, sheep and goats. The Feed the Future-funded USAID Yidgiri Activity is working to change this through a collaboration with ReCom, a network of communicators who reach remote livestock producers with information on quality fodder, efficient feeding techniques, and information about disease prevention that help increase productivity.
