OCTOBER 2022
Rallying the World to Respond to the Global Food Security Crisis
Today’s global food security crisis requires leaders to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance while also investing in resilience so communities can better respond to future shocks. The United States, through the Feed the Future initiative, has made long-term investments for more than a decade that boost agricultural productivity, reduce hunger and improve nutrition, building the capacities of people and systems in ways that help communities cope with unexpected shocks. At the United Nations General Assembly, the United States rallied the international community to catalyze action.
In a powerful address to Member States, President Joseph R. Biden announced an additional $2.9 billion in lifesaving emergency and food security assistance. With this support, Feed the Future is identifying innovative ways to scale climate-resilient seeds to farmers who need them, while distributing fertilizer and improving efficiencies so farmers can grow more with less. In partnership with the European Union, African Union and Spain, Secretary of State Antony Blinken co-chaired the Global Food Security Summit on the sidelines of the General Assembly to build on commitments in the Roadmap for Global Food Security. Feed the Future Deputy Coordinator for Development and USAID Global Food Crisis Coordinator Dina Esposito met with partners across sectors, from civil society, the private sector and country leaders, to propel global efforts. To achieve progress beyond what any one country can deliver, we must work together to marshal a truly global response to this crisis.
