Be the Generation to End the HIV Pandemic
Tomorrow, May 18, 2013, is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day. Each year, this day commemorates the global effort to develop a safe and effective vaccine that will protect against HIV. Other than an effective vaccine, no single approach is likely to have as dramatic an impact on the HIV pandemic; a vaccine is an essential tool toward the goal of ending AIDS. While there have been some disappointing recent results in the HIV vaccine field, the stalwart march to discover this critical tool is evident in the over 40 clinical trials that are ongoing or planned to begin in 2013. These studies will undoubtedly bring new scientific achievements to inform vaccine design. The scientific advances in understanding the behavior of both the human immune system and HIV itself, promise to lead us to a vaccine that can be added to our arsenal of HIV prevention tools. In the meantime, this scientific focus will only sharpen and our collective resolve to discover an HIV vaccine will become more strident.
