In India, USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah renewed our commitment to child survival at a press briefing in Mumbai with Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare official Anuradha Gupta. Dr. Shah announced the extension of two USAID flagship projects for child survival: the Integrated Maternal and Child Health Project (MCHIP), and the Health for the Urban Poor (HUP) project. USAID will also continue to provide support in establishing quick response teams for Indian states with the highest child mortality that have committed to accelerating their efforts for child survival.
While in Burma, Administrator Shah launched the public-private partnership Survive and Thrive. This partnership will expand the coverage of quality and high-impact maternal and newborn services, starting with essential newborn care, and link pediatricians, midwives, and obstetricians from U.S. professional associations to peer associations in Burma to build capacity in service delivery.
Progress Since the Child Survival Call to Action Since the Call to Action event, 172 countries have signed the A Promise Renewed pledge to accelerate declines in child deaths. More than 400 civil society and faith-based organizations and more than 2,000 individuals have also pledged support. Each signature represents a renewed commitment to give every child the best possible start in life. Governments are leading the effort to convene policymakers, technical experts, and development partners in a concerted effort to scale up high-impact strategies for maternal, newborn, and child survival.

The inaugural issue includes pieces on chlorhexidine for umbilical cord care and undernutrition. GHSP aims to advance knowledge on how programs are implemented and to promote what works.
