From the White House: A Deciding Moment for Women, Girls, and HIV

To mark National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator for the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Ambassador Eric Goosby, and Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, Melanne Verveer, recently announced a joint initiative to provide $4.65 million in small grants to civil society and grassroots organizations to address HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence. Carla Koppell, Senior Coordinator for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment at USAID, also spoke at the event. Read the official statement.

Delivering New Innovations for Women and Girls
Last week, Women Deliver announced the 50 most inspiring ideas and initiatives impacting women and girls in the field of global health. Among the top finalists were two incredible organizations, both funded by USAID, making a difference in HIV/AIDS.
- The Go Girls! Initiative, supported by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, helps prevent HIV infection in adolescent girls by developing youth-focused materials and approaches to tackling HIV/AIDS.

Skillz Street, supported by Grassroots Soccer, engages girls from South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe in soccer and teaches them about HIV prevention.

HIV Advocate Nominated for International Women of Courage Award
Patricia Pérez, a health activist who advocates on behalf of women and girls living with HIV/AIDS in Argentina, was one of this year’s nominees for the International Women of Courage award. Story of Hope from Tanzania: One Woman’s Battle against Stigma and Discrimination
Valediana first learned she was HIV positive when she gave birth to her son, Jotham. After being driven out of her home by family and abandoned by her partner, Valediana turned to the Christian Council of Tanzania for support. With the help of religious leaders from this faith-based organization, Valediana is taking steps to fight stigma and discrimination in her community. Read more of Valediana’s story [PDF, 165KB].
Putting HIV-positive Women First in Mozambique
In Mozambique, Mulheres Primero is helping women in rural communities protect themselves from HIV through prevention and health education programs. Supported by International Relief and Development and USAID, Mulheres Primero provides women with the training, skills, information, and peer support they need to make informed health decisions.

Scientists Meet to Discuss Latest HIV/AIDS Research at International Conference
Last week, more than 4,000 leading scientists and researchers from around the world gathered in Seattle, Washington, to discuss the latest HIV/AIDS research at the 19th annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI). Bringing together the world’s top scientific minds, CROI covered a host of cutting-edge issues ranging from prevention and treatment to basic clinical research.
