In honor of World AIDS Day, we look back
at the impact that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the
U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), and our implementing
partners have had, and recognize everyone’s commitment to leadership in
combating the HIV and AIDS epidemic worldwide.
As of September
2016, USAID under PEPFAR has:
Supported lifesaving antiretroviral treatment for more
than 11.5
million people
Supported HIV counseling and testing for more than 74.3 million people in FY 2016, including
11.5
million pregnant women with HIV testing
and counseling
Provided care and support to more than 6.2 million orphans and vulnerable
children and their families in FY 2016
Supported more
than 11.2
million voluntary medical
male circumcision procedures in eastern and southern Africa
This progress is noteworthy, and there is evidence [PDF, 389KB] from PEPFAR’s Population-based HIV Impact
Assessments that Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia are making significant strides
towards controlling the epidemic in older adults and babies.
This year, USAID’s Office of HIV/AIDS celebrates 30 years of continued investments in combating the HIV and
AIDS global epidemic. As we celebrate this milestone, USAID is
actively continuing to effectively test, treat and care for people around the
world, setting our sights on achieving zero new HIV infections. To reach the
goal of an AIDS-free generation, we must continue to respond to HIV and AIDS
with sustainable solutions and shared partnerships.
#HIV30x30
To honor USAID's global leadership on HIV and AIDS over the last three decades, USAID's Office of HIV/AIDS launched the #HIV30x30 social media campaign. From November 1 through World AIDS Day, USAID's Global Health Twitter account shared one daily photo, graphic or quote representing the last 30 years of USAID's HIV/AIDS work. Thank you to all of our partners, stakeholders and advocates who participated and promoted the campaign! We encourage you to continue to amplify messaging through your own social media channels.
