Immunization is a central strategy to end preventable child and maternal deaths. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) works with partners like Gavi, UNICEF, and WHO to support national governments to extend access to life-saving vaccines and ensure children do not die from vaccine-preventable deaths. The majority of Gavi support goes to purchasing vaccines. USAID technical aid supports the necessary systems improvements to deliver Gavi-financed and other vaccines to populations in need.
USAID flagship programs over the past 3 decades have worked with partners to build capacity to overcome barriers to immunization and effective use of vaccines and to improve the quality of services. These efforts include vaccine and immunization financing; supply chain management; service delivery improvements; demand generation; community partnership creation; data for decision-making; management and coordination; surveillance; operations research; and application of appropriate technologies.
