A Good Fellow at Goodfellow

17 CES bio-environmentalist, Jarrett Louder, oversees programs around Goodfellow AFB, Texas, ensuring environmental health and drinkable water protocols are maintained. The programs include stormwater runoff, cultural resources, and the deer population on base.

Lighting the Flightline

The 47 CES is helping to modernize the airfield lighting system at Laughlin AFB, Texas. The modernization effort will replace old constant-current regulators over 50 years old and ensure the flightline is safe, well-lit, and effective for training the next generation of airpower.

A New EM Course

On 27 Feb, 17 total force students including emergency managers (3E9) officers, senior non-commissioned officers, and civilians, kicked off a new Emergency Management Flight Leadership Course (MGT 410) at AFIT, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The course spans two weeks, with the first week focusing on the emergency management (EM) program and peacetime, while the second week focuses on CBRN and wartime EM.

Col Robert Bartlow, chief of the Natural Disaster Recovery Division (NDR) at Tyndall AFB, Florida, received the 2022 Society of American Military Engineers Newman Medal, and MSgt Bradley Taylor, manager of joint explosive ordnance disposal logistics and requirements at Indian Head, Maryland, won the 2022 EOD Master Blaster of the Year Award.

Today, we spotlight Ms Nancy Balkus, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Environment, Safety and Infrastructure, who wrote about installation energy conservation and combating the effect of climate change in The Military Engineer (TME) magazine. Balkus describes how the Air Force is developing comprehensive policies and investing in innovative solutions that maximize operational capability while promoting cleaner, more efficient resource use. She identifies three fundamental ways that the Air Force is bolstering these efforts: fleet electrification, increasing renewable energy projects across different sites, and developing a Climate Attributes Framework to uniformly integrate climate impacts and mitigation opportunities into the department’s decision-making.
