Cyber Security Awareness Month: Monitor
It is no secret that our adversaries are always preparing to launch attacks against us. In cyberspace, our adversaries can strike our control systems and render an air base obsolete at any given moment. At their disposal, adversaries can launch a selection of malicious cyber-attacks such as malware and Distributed Denial-of-service (DDoS) that can cripple our control systems. From previous cyber-attacks, we know formidable nation states such as China and Russia have, and will continue to, target our nation's critical infrastructure.
Although threats will continue to grow and pose a danger to mission success, other functional areas are impacted, too. Each functional area has a different mission for the Department of Air Force. Logistics, Medical, Facilities, Depots, Space, Nuclear, etc., are all functional communities impacted by cyberspace with respect to their control systems.
As we close out Cyber Security Awareness Month, with all these functional communities in mind, whose responsibility is it to monitor and protect our systems from attack? The answer is all of us. We all play an important role in identifying, protecting, detecting, responding to, and recovering from incidents in cyberspace and are critical in enhancing cyber awareness across Air Force installations.
