Hello Everyone!

In checking our FAASTeam Online Analysis Reporting Site (OARS) most of you have completed the National FAASTeam Performance Plan (NPP) tasks by the due dates listed, while others need to do some catchup.  Knowing your local area risks and having a planned mitigation strategy is key to accomplishing our FAASTeam Mission. All of you are an integral piece of the entire FAASTeam, and I appreciate all of your hard work.

Please keep your safety outreach focus going so that we can continue to educate the General Aviation community and reduce the GA accident and incident rate.

Master Pilot Awards — A Heartfelt Thanks

The FAASTeam presents hundreds of Master Pilot Awards each year to recognize great individual achievements. Recently, we had an award presentation that was extra special, and to thank the members of Flight Standards and the FAASTeam for making this unique presentation happen, received an e-mail from Jo Damato, Director of the National Business Aviation Association. She tells the story so well, that I’ve included an excerpt from her email below.

Mr Tait
From left to right: Jo Damato, Mr. Tait, Eric Sieracki

Thank you to everyone who had a part in helping to recognize Mr. Jeffrey Allen Tait in receiving his Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for achieving the incredible milestone of 50 years as an active pilot.

Mr. Tait was supposed to travel with his family from Moorestown, NJ to Orlando, FL to receive this award as part of a larger FAA ceremony at Sun n Fun. Unfortunately, his cancer that he's successfully beaten over the last 5 years returned, and he took an unexpected downturn and is now in home hospice care.

Last week, I reached out to many of you to see if anyone could help me get his award sent to New Jersey so I could work with the local fire department in my hometown where Mr. Tait has been a longtime active volunteer to present it to him in his home. The response last Friday was compassionate and incredibly swift. By the weekend, the FAA had sent me the beautiful color certificate marking the achievement, the lapel pin for Mr. Tait, and the spouse stick pin to present to his wife and two adult daughters. In addition, NBAA HQ sent me the 15,000 hour Flying Safety Award pin.

On Thursday, March 30, I had the pleasure of joining Eric Sieracki, PHL FSDO FAA Safety Team Program Manager at Mr. Tait's home. We arrived with the entire Moorestown Fire Department — about 40 men who consider Mr. Tait family — who arrived on their fire trucks. Mr. Tait was able to meet us in his living room, and let us know how surprised and happy he was to see everyone.

The fire department presented him with a beautiful tribute and lifetime award. I presented him with the NBAA Flying Safety Award. Eric then beautifully presented him the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Mr. Tait could not believe that the event he had to miss in Florida came to him in his NJ home. His wife and daughters were at his side. He told some great stories about his flying career and time spent at about 30 NBAA Conventions over his career. At this time, Eric Sieracki also presented him with a printed compilation — it must have been 100+ pages — of his FAA records marking his accomplishments from his first solo to his last achievement. It was a "this is your life" moment that was beautiful to witness. Mr. Tait was so happy to see his dedicated aviation career on the physical pages in front of him. He spent the rest of the evening hangar flying with all of us.

Thanks again to our friends at NBAA, and the FAA, for making this wish come true for the Tait family. We all get so busy with the big picture of this industry in our daily work that it really is something to pause and just reflect on one individual's amazing journey and passion for aviation. In that spirit, I invite you to read some of Mr. Tait's own recollections he submitted as articles to Air Facts Journal over the years. I bet they will make you smile! http://airfactsjournal.com/author/jefftait/.

With appreciation,

Jo

FAASTeam at Sun 'n Fun

At this year’s Sun N Fun event, AFS-850’s James Williams and Jennifer Caron represented the FAA Safety Briefing Magazine, promoting the magazine and FAASTeam with social media and photography. FAASTeam’s Fred Kaiser was on hand, working the AFS-800 booth in the FAA Safety Center. See if you can spot Fred in this photo. Hint: think H2O!

San Jose, CA FSDO FPM, who was recently honored by her office with the 2016 Mission Possible Award. She was nominated for the award by her peers to recognize her efforts to go above and beyond the minimum job expectations by working with stakeholders to reduce the number of pilot deviations, runway incursions and incidents, and for her dedication to aviation safety in both words and deeds. "She displays professionalism, dedication, commitment, and passion for safety, and outwardly displays behaviors that demonstrate that:

Good is never good enough. She mentors others in the pursuit of excellence, encourages others through personal example, and always makes the conscious decision to do what’s right."

Karen has been working at SJC since 2011, after transferring from Washington Dulles, and has a very active FAASTeam Safety Program in her district.
