ICWA Webinar Series: The Indian Child Welfare Act and the Role of the Federal Government

Time: 2:00 to 3:40 p.m. EST

The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) provides minimum Federal standards for the removal of Indian children from their families and placement in foster and adoptive homes. Federal agencies such as the Departments of Interior (DOI), Justice (DOJ), and Health and Human Services (HHS) each have a role in the implementation of ICWA.

This webinar is the first in a multipart series concerning the application of ICWA in State and Tribal courts. Panelists from the three federal agencies will discuss the following: (1) applicable federal regulations and guidance; (2) federal participation in federal and state court cases involving ICWA; and (3) funding and other programs from each agency which may be available to stakeholders. Additionally, an attorney experienced in Indian child welfare matters will discuss the historical context that led to Congress enacting ICWA and the statute’s key provisions. CLE has been requested. There is no tuition charge for this training.
