ANNOUNCEMENT
The National Training and Development Curriculum for Foster and Adoptive Parents is Now Available!
Starting today, the National Training and Development Curriculum (NTDC) is available for free to states, counties, territories, Tribal Nations, and private agencies!
The NTDC is an interactive classroom and online training program that prepares prospective foster and adoptive parents and kinship families to effectively parent children exposed to trauma.
Developed in partnership with the nation’s leading content experts, this state-of-the-art curriculum consists of three components that provide families with the ongoing skill development needed to understand and promote healthy child development to overcome separation and loss.
|
The free curriculum can support the following family types:
- families who foster, provide kinship care and/or adopt children from the child welfare system,
- families who adopt via the intercountry or private domestic process, and
- American Indian/Alaska Native families who foster, provide kinship care and/or adopt children from the tribal child welfare system.
The comprehensive yet flexible design includes content such as videos and podcasts so it can meet the needs of any family as well as training requirements. It encompasses over 38 themes that include contributions from adults that have experienced foster care and/or adoption as well as foster, adoptive, and kinship parents. Rigorous evaluation revealed some of the most significant gains in knowledge from pre to posttest were in themes that addressed the Impact of Substance Use, Mental Health Considerations, and Trauma Related Behavior.
Finally, in an effort to meet the needs of diverse families and communities, the curriculum has been adapted to be culturally relevant for American Indian Alaska Native families, with themes that have been specifically revised to meet the needs of this target population. The curriculum has also been adapted to meet the needs of families who adopt via the private domestic or intercountry process.
NTDC is led by Spaulding for Children in partnership with the Center for Adoption Support and Education, North American Council on Adoptable Children, the National Council for Adoption, ChildTrauma Academy, and the University of Washington, School of Social Work.
Under grant #90CO1134, NTDC is funded through a five-year cooperative agreement with the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Children’s Bureau. The cooperative agreement was established based on requests from states and agencies across the nation that needed a modern, trauma-informed training that would help prepare and provide ongoing skill development to prospective foster, adoptive and kinship families.
