Welcome to your latest Open Door update
In this edition, we look at how updating a heating system in an independent living scheme is benefitting older residents, we look at progress towards building 36 new Council homes in Walmgate, and we ask 'are you getting all you're entitled to'?
New heating system gives George fingertip control
George Harris lives at Honeysuckle House: “Having angina, I feel the heat and the cold. This new heating system makes it easier to keep the flat at a constant temperature with the new thermostat.
“We’ve had a whole winter with it, and I like it better than the old storage heaters. Once we learned how to use them, the heaters are much easier to control - and they look better too."

Housing allocation review
We're reviewing aspects of how we let Council homes in York.
Among the improvements are providing extra support for households with complex needs. We also want to make the way homes are allocated clearer and fairer.
Please take part in this consultation before 25 October, and help us shape these changes.

1,000 slippers given out with more event dates
We're helping keep older people safer and independent at home by preventing slips and falls.
At Slipper Social events, we and AgeUK York offer information, advice, a cuppa and a free pair of well-fitting slippers. So that even more people can benefit from them, more events have been announced for this autumn and winter.

Let us in to keep your home safe!
Please let us into your home for the range of safety inspections, maintenance and tests we do through the year. We find and fix potential safety risks before they become serious - one of our key landlord responsibilities. We'll always arrange an appointment first. Please keep it or let us know if you need to rearrange. Always check ID before letting anyone in.

Don't deal with doorstep chancers
Don’t deal with strangers who cold-call and offer you loans, goods or work there and then. Take your time: keep them on the doorstep and check their ID. Only let them in if you have a pre-arranged appointment.
Check out the business's reviews and get 3 quotes before committing to any work. For more information or to report a problem call Citizens Advice on 0808 223 1133.

How to spot financial abuse and report it
We're helping residents recognise the signs of financial abuse against older people, particularly where the person causing harm is an adult child or grandchild. We want to encourage victims, families, friends and neighbours to spot the signs and seek support.
Find out how to spot signs of financial abuse and how to report your concerns.
