Once your tree has done its job this Christmas, it can still be useful!
Donate it to York Round Table so that it can be compostedÂ
Drop it off for a small donation (£5) to this year’s chosen charity, York Food Bank, at Askham Bar Tesco Extra on Saturday 10 January between 9am and 4pm.
Alternatively, for a £10 donation fee per tree, York Round Table will come to you and collect your tree.

Dispose of batteries properly to avoid fires this Christmas
With Christmas coming up and many of us receiving new toys and gadgets, it’s really important to dispose of old batteries safely. Batteries - especially lithium-ion or rechargeable ones - can explode or catch fire if they get crushed, wet or damaged; that risk isn’t just at home, but also at recycling centres or in bin-lorries.
In York, you can recycle used batteries at the household waste recycling centres.

Sustainable festivities: how you can reduce your waste this Christmas
The festive period is a time to celebrate and enjoy decorating trees, giving gifts and eating delicious food.Â
But all of this can have an impact on the environment. The additional waste from  Christmas is estimated to exceed 3 million tonnes in the UK. Â
For example, of the 175 million mince pies purchased (using 175 tonnes of aluminium packaging), approximately 74 million are discarded. Â
And the wrapping paper the UK uses each year is enough to wrap the island of Guernsey.Â
Of course, these activities are what makes Christmas special, but there are actions you can take to reduce your environmental impact footprint during the celebration. Â
