Dear Volunteers,

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2025!

This year we celebrate 100 years of West Sussex Libraries and we hope you will join some of the exciting centenary events and activities we have planned.

We'll have something for everyone so please check out our special centenary webpages which will be updated with information throughout the year.

What a Jolly December!

It was lovely to see so many of you joining volunteer events during December and for me to have the opportunity to catch up and wish you well. Thank you all for taking part in a variety of games and activities - it was all very entertaining. Along with the cakes and treats on offer we have really raised the standard for this year!

I'd love to be able to include photos from all our events but here are a few.....

Centenary Memories

Part of our work during our centenary year is to capture memories from library staff, volunteers and customers.

Some libraries will be creating memory walls or having memory books available for you to tell us ‘What My Library Means to Me’; these books will be arriving in libraries soon.

We are still collecting memories to add to newsletters during the year, so if you have a memory from West Sussex Libraries to share get please get in touch!

Share a Memory

Library of Possibility and Wonder

At the heart of our centenary celebrations will be the Library of Possibilities and Wonder, an exciting virtual reality project. We’ll be bringing VR headsets as well as 3D posters to your local library during the year.

If you use Burgess Hill, Hassocks or Hurstpierpoint Library, you will be able to try the VR headsets in February.

The VR headsets will be in library groups in the months below

March – Littlehampton
April – Crawley
May – Shoreham
June – Storrington
July – Haywards Heath
August – Bognor Regis
September – East Grinstead
October – Horsham
November – Worthing
December – Chichester

Centenary library cards!

We are excited to reveal special new library cards this year. The Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson, illustrator Axel Scheffler and publisher Macmillan Children's Books have designed a new children's library card for us.

Libraries will also be receiving new adult cards with our gold centenary logo .
