We provided you with an update about the National Wraparound Childcare Programme in July. So far, the panel has agreed over £700,000 worth of funding on projects across West Sussex. This funding is to support the expansion or creation of wraparound childcare provision from September 2024.
There is still plenty of time to apply for grant funding. Please refer to the Wraparound Childcare Programme Funding web page for the revised funding application windows and further information.
To support the continued expansion of early years and childcare provision, the Early Years and Childcare team, along with a number of key stakeholders, have produced this comprehensive guidance. This guidance is for anyone wishing to establish early years and childcare provision in a school. It will support you with your wraparound childcare plans, from the initial planning stage through to opening your provision.
Wraparound childcare is for school aged children that wraps around the conventional school day, from 8.00am to 6.00pm. The different types of expansion which can be considered as part of the wraparound childcare programme provision are:
- Expanded places – the addition of places to existing provision that already meets the wraparound definition.
- Expanded hours – the creation of additional hours, or days, to an existing provision to meet the wraparound definition.
- Expanded provision – the addition of before or after-school provision to an existing provider to meet the wraparound definition.
- Creation of places – the creation of new wraparound places as part of the creation of a new wraparound provision.
The Department for Education expect all new or expanded wraparound childcare places to be available to parents by September 2025 at the latest. Funding will not be awarded to provision made available after September 2025.
If you have any questions, please email wraparoundchildcare@westsussex.gov.uk.
An updated timeline of events which details key dates and next steps in the early years and childcare expansion in 2024/2025 is now available.
The e-Bug programme shares messaging on infection prevention and control, and antimicrobial stewardship to promote behaviour change in the antimicrobial users of the future.
e-Bug is offering a £25 retail voucher for after-school staff to participate in a one-hour online focus group to help shape e-Bug’s future design and content. During the session, you will talk about designing resources and activities for use in after-school settings.
e-Bug offers a range of resources supporting interactive and practical tasks that can be done outside of a traditional classroom setting, such as Cub Scout and Girl Guide meetings. They are exploring how these activities could be adapted to after-school settings, such as clubs. They would like input from after-school supervisors and staff as the end-users of their product.
To register your interest in participating, please complete this form.
Here are a range of courses that are suitable for wraparound and out of school providers. To book a place, click the course name below. You can also visit West Sussex Services for Education and select your required course.

Useful information
Please inform the Family Information Service if your setting needs to close or is re-opening. Email family.info.service@westsussex.gov.uk and include your setting name, Ofsted URN, the date you intend to close/open, and any changes to your operating hours. If you inform us of re-opening, you will be reinstated on the public list and appear on our website www.westsussex.gov.uk/fis.
We would expect you to make contact with your Early Years and Childcare Adviser (EYCA) to talk through your circumstances, where possible, before making the decision to close the setting. If you are not able to make immediate contact with your EYCA then please email your nearest Early Help Hub using the following email addresses:
Where there are not clearly evidenced reasons why the setting had no option to close, there could be implications for funding received as per the government guidance.
We have a range of online training available for you to access for your staff to ensure they have the most up to date information to support them in their role:
