Which library do you volunteer at and how often?
Steyning Library at least once a week
Why did you decide to become a SRC volunteer?
Having just left my teaching job; I was looking for a voluntary role that enabled me to still engage with children. I have a real love of books and, as part of my job, I enjoyed seeing children also find their love for reading.
What are you enjoying about the role?
It has been so lovely to see children come into the library and get a chance to chat to them about the books they’ve read and support them to choose a new book, perhaps by a new author! I have also enjoyed meeting the lovely people who work at the library and recognise how diverse and important their roles are for their community – their work is invaluable!
What would you say to someone considering the SRC volunteer role?
Absolutely give it a go, the atmosphere is calm and inspiring, and the rewards are instant – children love to succeed and you can be part of process that helps them recognise they have been successful.
What to do like best about libraries and do you have a favourite book/author?
There is nothing I like more than to browse the shelves to see if something new catches my eye. The books I have read over the summer have been much more diverse, simply because I have been in the library more. I really can’t answer who my favourite author is, as there are so many! However, my favourite children’s author is Vashti Hardy and I have loved her ‘Brightstorm’ series of books.
