The Schools Library Service is inviting all West Sussex primary schools to participate in the 2024/25 West Sussex Picture Books to Shout About! Award.
Our exciting book award is celebrating its eleventh year and provides thousands of children with the opportunity to share a diverse range of high-quality texts with their peers and wider school community. Over the last decade, pupils have also been able to interact with many of the nominated authors and illustrators via our virtual event programme. Infants and juniors can join in and you can participate as a class, a book group or a whole school.
The award aims to:
- Develop pupils’ visual literacy, critical thinking, and listening and speaking skills through the sharing of books and discussion.
- Promote and develop positive attitudes to reading and reading for enjoyment.
- Increase staff knowledge of the best new picture books.
The 2024/25 Picture Book to Shout About! award is open to subscribing and non subscribing schools. For further information and to take part, please register below.
In addition to voting for their favourite book, last year participating schools took part in virtual author events with the authors and illustrators of all four titles. Chloe Savage, author of the 2024 winning title ‘The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish’ said:
"I am absolutely delighted that The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish has won the Picture Books to Shout About! Award 2023/24. Being voted for by the children makes this even more precious to me, thank you so much."
Since winning the Picture Books to Shout About! Award, ‘The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish’ has also won the Waterstones Best Illustrated Book Winner 2024 and is currently shortlisted for the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration 2024.
Every year, teachers work alongside the Schools Library Service to select the four shortlisted books which will be read, shared, and voted on by children, with the winning book announced on World Book Day. This year we are looking for one subscribing school to work alongside the Schools Library Service team to shortlist the four titles for this year’s West Sussex Picture Books to Shout About! Award.
This shortlisting event would take the form of an approximately one hour in-school staff meeting and is an excellent CPD opportunity. SLS staff will provide the books and host the shortlisting event in school. By taking part in the shortlisting event, teachers will have the opportunity to engage with new high quality children’s picture books, critically analyse texts against set Book Award criteria, and share their opinions with Schools Library Service staff.
This event will take place on the week beginning 14 October 2024.
To take part, your school must subscribe to West Sussex Schools Library Service and be signed up for the West Sussex Picture Book award 2024-25.
