We have recently published our 'Language and Terminology' learning briefing and podcast.
Language is a powerful tool for communication. But, sometimes the way that we use language can create stigma or provide barriers to understanding or positive engagement. Read our learning briefing, and listen to our podcast, to find out about the impact of our language, and how changes in the language we use can have a substantial effect upon thinking and the experience of those we work with.

We have now published the Strategic Provider Concerns Group Protocol.
The purpose of the Strategic Provider Concerns Group is to provide strategic direction and support where there is evidence of significant provider concerns in relation to organisational abuse and neglect in a domiciliary or care home provider, or another provider organisation.
The group will usually be initiated by referral to it, either following or during a Provider Concerns process. The referral may come either directly from the Provider Concerns Process, or via the Quality Assurance and Safeguarding Information subgroup.

We have once again consulted with the Burnside Day Centre Digital Communications Group, on our Easy Read Annual Report 2023/34.
The group provided us, and our easy read supplier, with invaluable feedback, and supported us to create a document that is accessible and fit-for-purpose. We would like to thank Burnside Day Centre for their continued support.

Questions surrounding professional curiosity were raised, and as such, we have added reflective prompts relating to professional curiosity to the learning briefing.

The Sussex Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures have been updated to better reflect scenarios in which abuse might take place, as well as provide information about the new Patient Safety Incident Response Framework.
The key changes made to sections 2.1-2.3 are:
- Clearer information regarding undertaking an enquiry.
- The inclusion of information about the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework, which sets out the NHS’ approach to developing and maintaining effective systems and processes for responding to patient safety incidents for the purpose of learning and improved patient safety; this replaces the Serious Incident Process.
- The inclusion of information about romance fraud, and domestic abuse as defined by the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, including non-fatal strangulation and survival sex/sexual exploitation.
- The inclusion of harmful traditional practices and the Serious Violence Duty, when outlining scenarios in which abuse might take place.
Please do familiarise yourself with these updates and share this information within your organisations.

Have you experienced differing views with other professionals around levels of risk, roles, or responsibilities in relation to safeguarding practice? Have you disagreed with someone else's decision around capacity? Do you struggle to feel heard, or to raise your concerns regarding professional practice?
The Sussex Safeguarding Escalation and Resolution Protocol provides an escalation and resolution process for disagreements between agencies or professionals in relation to adult safeguarding, including organisational safeguarding processes. This includes situations where mental capacity decision-making is identified as a specific issue or concern within adult safeguarding.
It is key that all professionals should feel able to respectfully challenge decision-making and to see this as their right and responsibility in promoting best practice. This protocol provides professionals with the means to raise concerns that they may have about decisions made by other professionals or agencies.
