Our Sussex Day quiz is back for 2024! How well do you know your Sussex history?
It's Sussex Day on Sunday 16 June and our local history librarians have put their heads together and come up with a new quiz.
Think you know what legendary creature is supposed to have lived in St Leonards Forest or which National Trust property was severely damaged by fire in 1989? Then take up the challenge!
It's Volunteers' Week from Monday 3 June – Sunday 9 June!
If you are looking to make a difference here are some current volunteer opportunities in our libraries:
- We are looking for people aged 14+ to help us deliver the 2024 Summer Reading Challenge, Marvellous Makers. You will help families sign up to the challenge online, chat with children about the books they have read, hand out rewards and encourage children to keep reading.
- We are looking to recruit volunteers in the following libraries, Steyning, Henfield, Crawley and Horsham, to help support our Read On project; our scheme supporting adults with limited or no literacy skills. Volunteers will offer one-to-one support in the library helping adults develop and improve their reading skills while gaining confidence using the ‘Yes We Can Read’ workbook.
It's the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings this month.
We have a number of resources available in our libraries to help with researching military records, family history and information from wartime Sussex.
Lots of us love to read a good crime novel.
Did you know that June is National Crime Reading Month and a celebration of the crime genre by the Crime Writers Association in partnership with the Reading Agency?
If you’re looking for what’s new in West Sussex Libraries we have our list of just added crime and thriller titles and some recommended reads if you want to start a crime series with a Sussex flavour.
For those taking part in our Reading Journey, in June you need to Stop to Solve a Crime. If you haven't already started, it’s not too late to sign up.
Did you know that our library staff answered over 123,000 enquiries last year?
Among the more unusual enquiries included finding a copy of an article from the British Dental Association 1887: Loss of four teeth owing to the use of India rubber bands.
What will you use our Ask a Librarian service to help you find out?
