PUBLISHED: 2023/24 Annual Report

We are pleased to let you know that we have now published our 2023/24 Annual Report.

Annie Callanan, Independent Chair, said:

"This year’s report details the Board’s work carried out during 2023/24 to improve safeguarding for adults with care and support needs in West Sussex. It reflects real progress on our two priorities; embedding learning and assurance, and self-neglect.

I acknowledge and greatly appreciate the continued commitment of all our members, and diligent work of our Board Support Team. This work is reflected in our successes with improvements to the safety for adults. I am confident that we will be equally effective in continuing on our improvements for adult safeguarding next year."

An easy read version of the Annual Report will be published in due course.

PUBLISHED: Self-Neglect Meta-Analysis Safeguarding Adults Review

Learning Icon

Our Board commissioned a meta-analysis of Safeguarding Adults Reviews featuring self-neglect to consider wider learning for self-neglect practice, process, policy, and procedure.

For Sussex wide learning, the East Sussex Safeguarding Adults Board and the Brighton & Hove Safeguarding Adults Board contributed and participated in the Review.

The analysis looked at all seven published Reviews across Sussex involving self-neglect between 2020 and 2023.

The analysis includes the circumstances of two adults who were referred to our Board; IL and TB, who both had a history of self-neglect.

The recommendations of the Review are being taken forward. This includes an update to the self-neglect chapter of the Sussex safeguarding policy and procedures, creation of a new self-neglect practice guidance for those cases which sit outside of safeguarding, and a new complex needs toolkit. We will let you know when this work has been completed and ready for your use.

In the meantime, for learning from this Review, please share the report and associated learning resources widely within your organisations.

PUBLISHED: Self-neglect staff survey outcomes

In 2023/24 we carried out a staff survey to understand your experiences of working with adults who self-neglect. We did this because self-neglect is one of our priorities for 2023/24 and 2024/25, and we understand that there is a need to improve self-neglect practice both locally and nationally (you may be aware that the second National Safeguarding Adults Review Analysis has found that over 75% of Reviews feature self-neglect).

Thank you to the very many of you who participated in this survey; your insights, experiences, and views have been very valuable to contributing to learning and actions to take forward, and are linked to our Meta-Analysis Review findings.

Read about the results of this survey below.

LAST CHANCE: Safeguarding adults practice awards

Awards 2024 Image

This year, we would like to recognise excellent safeguarding adults practice across the partnership. To do this, we are launching the West Sussex Safeguarding Adults Board safeguarding adults practice awards.

These awards are designed to empower staff to recognise and celebrate exemplary safeguarding adults practice. This could be practice by an individual, or by a team. It could be within your own agency, or another agency that you work with.

There will be six awards, in line with the six key principles that underpin all adult safeguarding work. When you submit your nomination form, you will be asked to confirm which of the awards you are submitting your nomination for.

All nominees will receive an acknowledgement of their nomination, in recognition of their practice. These acknowledgements can also be used as evidence for their continual professional development.

Award winners, as well as nominating professionals, will be notified of their success, and invited to the Safeguarding Adults Board Conference. Awards will be presented to award winners at the Conference.

Please note that the deadline for this year's nomination submissions is Friday 16 August 2024.

Easy read adult safeguarding leaflet

East Sussex County Council has created an easy read version of the pan-Sussex Adult Safeguarding leaflet.

Easy read documents are designed to be used by people with a learning disability, or by people who have difficulty with understanding standard written information. Easy read documents use short sentences and pictures to make information easier to access for people with a learning disability.

We now have printed copies of this leaflet available. If you would like to receive printed copies of this leaflet, please contact us via SafeguardingAdultsBoard@westsussex.gov.uk

Sussex Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures: have you updated your documents?

The Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, and West Sussex Safeguarding Adults Boards recently promoted the new Sussex Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures website. You can access the website at www.sussexsafeguardingadults.org.

We are now asking that you ensure that any internal documents, including internal procedures, are reviewed for references to the Sussex Safeguarding Adults Policy and Procedures. Where needed, hyperlinks and references to the URL address, need to be updated with the new URL address.

Across the partnerships, the Boards and agencies will be working to ensure that all documents, both internal and published documents, reflect this change. In the meantime, a redirect will remain in place on the previous website.

We hope that you have had a chance to visit the new website. If you have any feedback, we would be keen to hear it. Please email your feedback to safeguardingadultsboard@westsussex.gov.uk, or click on the ‘Feedback’ button on the website.
