Welcome to our February newsletter containing all the latest news and updates from across West Sussex.
West Sussex County Council will invest £2bn to support residents, communities and businesses over the coming year, including an extra £81.9m of funding for vital day-to-day services.
Our budget for 2024/25 was agreed at a meeting of Full Council on Friday, 16 February, where councillors also approved Our Council Plan, which sets out our priorities.
As part of this budget it was agreed that we will spend £91m on services that will help protect the environment, including recycling and waste disposal.
In addition, it was agreed that our Capital Investment Programme will invest nearly £17m on environment-related projects, including:
- Renewable energy schemes and energy battery storage
- Works to reduce the carbon footprint of our buildings
- Improvements to our Recycling Centres
- The anaerobic digestion of separate food waste
- Nature restoration and increasing biodiversity.
You now need to pre-book a time slot to visit all of our Recycling Centres.
The 'Book to Recycle' system reduces visitors' waiting times and gives our staff more time to offer recycling advice and divert more materials to recycling. This leads to a reduction in the amount of waste being processed, makes the sites more efficient, and ultimately helps to lower the cost of disposal.
Slots can be booked up to 14 days in advance or on the same day, and are for either 15 or 30 minutes, depending on the site you choose to visit. Booking is easy and can be done online via the link below or by calling 01243 642106.
Book-a-Bus is aimed at those living or working in the county’s rural areas with limited or no traditional bus service. Journeys are pre-bookable, and all vehicles are fully accessible with low floor access, making it easier to board for those with mobility issues or those using a wheelchair.
If you don’t live in a Book-a-Bus zone you can find full details of all the latest incentives and offers for bus travel in West Sussex on our website.
Disabled or state pension-age residents can get free travel with a concessionary pass. Make sure you apply if you are eligible. Click here for further information.

Did you know that all districts and borough councils in West Sussex offer free kerbside collections of small electrical items?
You shouldn't dispose of small electricals in either your recycling or waste bins at home. This is because they often contain hazardous materials which can start a fire when the items are crushed during the collection and sorting process.
District and boroughs councils also offer a variety of other free kerbside collections including textiles, batteries, and coffee pods. The collections they offer, as well as how they work differ, so it is important to check with your local council for more information:
If a watercourse, ditch, stream, river or culvert runs adjacent to, through or under your land/property (even if it does not fall within your property boundary as set out by your Title Deeds) then you are likely to be responsible for the maintenance of the watercourse – you are what’s known as a 'riparian owner'.
All riparian owners are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of their watercourses to ensure that they are not a flood risk to other people, roads, paths or properties.
