Festive greetings! Welcome to our December newsletter containing all the latest news and updates from across West Sussex
Work to make our buildings more environmentally friendly and energy efficient is taking place at seven libraries, six fire stations and a day centre over the next few months as part of a £7.9m investment to drive down the carbon footprint of 14 council buildings.
A range of measures to reduce carbon emissions will be installed across the sites, including air source heat pumps, new windows, improved insulation, and solar panels. The aim is to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and enable buildings to operate using renewable energy sources.
This exciting project supports our Climate Change Strategy target to be a carbon neutral and climate resilient organisation by 2030.
Due to the nature of the works, scheduled to take place between December 2023 and March 2024, there is likely to be an impact on the day-to-day running of libraries. Check to see whether your local library is affected below.
Did you know that Christmas is the most wasteful holiday? Christmas creates an estimated extra three million tonnes of waste each year in the UK, including items like wrapping paper, Christmas cards, food and packaging, as well as old items that are replaced with the extra ‘stuff’ we accumulate. Because of this it is important to remember to recycle as much clean, dry, and loose (not tied up in plastic bags) material as you can. If you are ever unsure about an item, refer to our handy A to Z of Recycling.
Due to the bank holidays, some collection days may change over the Christmas period. It is important to check with your local district or borough council for more information on how you may be affected.
The government has just launched a new public Energy Efficient Home campaign. It provides trusted information on heat pumps, including how to apply for a £7,500 grant for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. It promotes three energy efficiency measures – cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and solar panels. You can try their checker tool to find out which of these actions might be suitable for your home and to discover more.
