IMPORTANT: Reminder regarding adult safeguarding referrals

Important Icon

We recently circulated a bulletin regarding adult safeguarding referrals into the local authority, and how you can support to ensure that the appropriate pathway is used for raising concerns, helping to ensure that adults who need a safeguarding response can be supported without delay.

Please be reminded that there are currently two Adult Social Care pathways, with a third pathway, relating to quality concerns, in development:

Please note that, before raising a safeguarding concern, is it important that you refer to the Safeguarding Thresholds: Guidance for Professionals (PDF, 415KB). If, following that, you remain unsure as to whether a safeguarding referral is required, you should call 03302 228400 to speak with a social care practitioner in the Safeguarding Adults Hub. If the matter is not for Adult Social Care, please refer to the appropriate agency.

NEW: Hidden Harms animation

Animation

The Norfolk Safeguarding Adults Board have worked in partnership with Dewis Choice, the Centre for Age, Gender and Social Justice, to produce a new animation, 'Hidden Harms', which highlights the unique challenges that older adults face when domestic abuse occurs.

The animation is intended to be a tool for professionals and family members to support a conversation with older adults, and to encourage them to access support, if they are experiencing abuse.

Norfolk Safeguarding Adults Board have made this animation available to us, so that it can be used as a learning and support tool in West Sussex. Please do watch and share this animation, which includes contact information for WORTH Specialist Domestic Abuse Service.

NEW: Wound care and pain management resources

Our Safeguarding Adults Review in respect of Beverley, published earlier this year, highlighted concerns around workforce skills and knowledge in relation to the consistent application of tools for wound care and pain management. Following a recommendation from the Review, and subsequent advice from our Health colleagues, we are therefore sharing guidance to support frontline staff with practice in these areas.

PUBLISHED: Easy Read Annual Report 2022/23

Once again, we have worked with Easy Read Online to produce an easy read version of our 2022/23 Annual Report.

In the course of producing this document, we consulted with the Burnside Day Centre Digital Communications Group (DCG), who provided us with invaluable feedback, enabling us to make improvements to our report and create a document that is fit-for-purpose and engaging.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Burnside Day Centre DCG for their work on this project.

PUBLISHED: Older People Case File Audit

Earlier this year we conducted an audit into older people safeguarding case files. This audit looked at the records of ten people over the age of 65, and looked to evaluate and reflect on practice, learn from experience, inform multi-agency practice development, and strengthen multi-agency working.

We have now published the outcomes of this audit on our website.

UPDATED: Safeguarding Adults Thresholds

The Modern Slavery Statutory Guidance has been updated following a judicial review challenge that led to the Home Secretary agreeing to withdraw, reconsider and revise parts of the guidance.

The pan-Sussex modern slavery section of the Safeguarding Adults Thresholds (Guidance for Professionals) has been reviewed in light of this, as well as our West Sussex modern slavery Safeguarding Adults Review, to ensure that they reflect the changes required.

Please ensure that you are always referring to the most up-to-date version of the Safeguarding Adults Thresholds document, by accessing it directly from our website each time.

UPDATED: Escalation and Resolution Protocol

The Sussex Safeguarding Escalation and Resolution Protocol supports consistent and timely decision-making where there may be disagreements or issues arising between professionals and agencies in relation to adult safeguarding. The protocol includes guidance in relation to Mental Capacity issues and safeguarding, and has a streamlined escalation process that explicitly ensures relevant safeguarding leads are consulted at an appropriate point.

This protocol has been updated and has been published on our website.

UPDATED: Quality Assurance Framework

The Quality Assurance Framework is designed to enable the Board to fulfil its remit of ensuring local safeguarding arrangements are effective and deliver the outcomes that people want. The Quality Assurance Framework acts as the mechanism by which the Safeguarding Adults Board will hold local agencies to account for their safeguarding work, including prevention and risk management.

An updated version of this Framework has been published on our website; please familiarise yourself with this document.
