To mark Remembrance Day this month, we have put together a number of resources that are available in our libraries to help with researching military records, family history and information from wartime Sussex.
Plus, you can watch a selection of images Remembering Wartime Sussex from West Sussex Past Pictures.
Are you interested in military family history? Join one of our librarians for a free webinar featuring expert advice on First World War military family history research. This webinar is intended for those who have already started their own research but want advice on what to do next.

This is a free online Zoom event.
This month, we are spotlighting four books that deal with war in different ways.
The four we have chosen are:
- Sebastian Faulks’ Birdsong which illustrates the visceral nature of trench warfare by depicting soldiers trapped underground.
- Pat Barker’s Regeneration which uses real figures from history to examine the psychological effects that going to war can have on soldiers.
- Joseph Heller’s blackly comic novel, Catch-22 which looks at the lengths soldiers would go to avoid combat.
-
Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières maintains dark humour but this time against a romance set in Kefalonia.
We recently received a national grant to film some of our library weekly activities.
You can watch the new, one-minute long films on West Sussex Libraries' YouTube channel.
So, if you would like to take a look at our Rhyme Time or Story Magic sessions, want to find out more about Home Library Direct or see what happens at a Digital Volunteer session, now is your chance.
We would like to thank LibraryOn, a national project supported by Arts Council England and facilitated by the British Library, for the grant money.
Henfield Library is temporarily closed until Friday 24 November for ceiling maintenance work, but you can still take advantage of library services.
The following services are available in the village while the work is carried out:
A new weekly Saturday Storytime is starting at Littlehampton Library on Saturday 11 November, 11.00am - 12.00pm.
