Children can become superstars at the library this summer by taking part in Ready, Set, Read! the Summer Reading Challenge 2023!
Their challenge? To read six amazing library books over the holiday. They will also receive a fab fold out booklet and, the more they read, the more smelly stickers they will collect.
Registration is now open and the challenge launches on Saturday 8 July.
We’ve got some brilliant activities taking place in selected libraries to help kickstart the challenge on launch day, including an amazing competition to win a family ticket to the Labyrinth Challenge X Leonardslee.
So, what are you waiting for? The challenge is only a hop, skip and a jump away!
Join the Disability Register Team for free SEND (special educational needs and disability) friendly activities all over West Sussex this summer! Including sessions with children’s entertainer Chris North, sensory stories, crafts, construction club and more!
How regularly do we choose what to read by judging a book based on its cover? This is what we’re asking this month as part of the West Sussex Libraries Reading Challenge.
We asked library staff to come up with some favourite book recommendations chosen by their covers.
Join in the conversation and tell us what you're reading!
All you need to do is take a photo of you and the book you're reading and send us a short write up. We’ll include a selection in next month’s newsletter, and keep an eye out for some reviews on our social media channels too.
Are you planning some adventures this summer? Each of our 36 libraries have travel guides, ranging from picturesque walks, to travel writing about your favourite far-flung places.
Our eLibrary also has a range of travel themed eMagazines available through Libby to help you get to know your destinations and, if you're looking for something to enjoy in the sun, check out eAudiobooks on BorrowBox. We also provide access to the language app Transparent Language Online, which is a fun and effective way to quickly gain some language knowledge for your trip. Make sure you download it to your phone or tablet before you head off!
Lastly, if you've been taking part in the West Sussex Libraries Reading Challenge, this summer could be the perfect opportunity to revisit some of your favourite themes or get ready for next month's theme Books set by the sea.
Do you love books and reading?
Would you like to link up with other people who feel the same?
Come along to one of our friendly Reading Friends groups where you can chat about your favourite (and least liked!) books and authors, or read a book on a different theme each month if you'd like to.
We currently have Reading Friends groups at Billingshurst, Broadfield, Haywards Heath, Rustington (a reminiscence group), Selsey, Steyning and Storrington libraries, with more to come!
We’ve signed up to an exciting, free cultural electronic resource.
BFI Replay is a new digital archive from the British Film Institute, available exclusively in public libraries.
It covers thousands of videos and TV programmes from the past 60 years, offering a glimpse into Britain’s past, its people and places, recording and revealing an era of rapid social, industrial, political and technological change.
You can access the service in all of our 36 libraries, via our public access computers or by using the library Wi-Fi on your mobile device or laptop. BFI Replay is listed in our A to Z of Electronic Resources.
Happy viewing!

- We are supporting V2 Radio’s Tonnes of Tins Campaign, which runs from Monday 3 July to Friday 11 August. The aim is to collect as many tins of food as possible to pass on to local food banks, homeless refuges and family support teams who all directly support those in food insecurity. Donation points can be found in libraries across the county.
We can bring books and other library resources to you?
If you are unable to visit your local library due to age, illness, mobility problems, caring responsibilities or other reasons, one of our DBS-checked volunteers can bring you books, audiobooks and other resources free of charge.
Contact your local library for an application form or fill in our online form.
