Currently, the country is in a very challenging space regarding teacher recruitment and retention. Historically low recruitment into initial teacher training and falling retention rates suggest a deterioration in the attractiveness of teaching professions compared to other occupations in the labour market.
This edition of Education Matters takes the time and space to consider these issues in depth. Yasmin Maskatiya offers her thoughts on the NFER annual teacher labour market and Derry Richardson considers the future of initial teacher training.
In the interest of providing a balanced reflection, this edition also celebrates successes and opportunities in the areas of recruitment and apprenticeships. The Teaching School Hub share their professional development offer for teachers at all stages in their careers, and HR offer various updates on upcoming recruitment fairs and their recruitment campaign for school support staff.
Lastly, I would highly recommend that you take the time to read the School's Voice interview with Woodlands Meed celebrating their experience of school staff apprenticeships. I hope that you will find it useful in considering ways to develop and retain staff in your settings.
Best wishes
Paul Wagstaff, Assistant Director for Education & Skills

HR recruitment support
Campaign page for support staff recruitment
Our support staff campaign page is now LIVE!
As well as the link above, there is also a footer which schools can use on their emails, job adverts and websites to aid recruitment (see below).
|
The page on the main WSCC website will direct traffic back to the school job adverts page. The campaign page will provide generic information on working in schools and associated benefits; its focus is around support staff as requested by school representatives.
We are also in the process of making developments to the supporting guidance on WSSfS. We will update you when we are ready to relaunch this content. Please note that all current information is still available for you to access.
Recruitment Fair 18 July 2023 15:00-19:00
Following our successful recruitment fair earlier this term, a further event will be held at Field Place, Worthing on 18 July 2023. Our last event was attended by delegates from a variety of localities along the coast, covering Chichester, Angmering, Littlehampton, Barnham, Worthing and surrounding areas.
If anyone from schools is willing to come along and support the July event, they are very welcome. To express your interest, please contact jenny.gumbrell@westsussex.gov.uk for more information.
In September, we anticipate that there will be another recruitment fair opportunity, likely in a different part of the county. Details will be shared once a venue has been secured.
