KEEP HYDRATED
Encouraging those in our care to drink at the best of times can be a challenge. Staff teams are getting very creative during this unprecedented hot spell. Love a lolly- staff who equally need hydrating (especially wearing masks) are encouraged to sit down with an ice lolly with a person in their care. Some are making fruit smoothies which provide added nutrients too along with mocktails (non alcoholic drinks).
Medical services/clinics and outpatients (day surgery). Please remember that a person may not have had anything to eat and drink since 9pm yesterday. So any delays/cancellations for an older frailer person will have other impacts on them and lead to delirium or UTI's creating other issues and leading to falls.
Community Transport/discharges from hospital. That last person to be dropped off, may have been in a hot vehicle or waiting lounge for a good few hours. Provide water on route, and try to keep cool.

Vital Learning resources for teams supporting people
with learning difficulties and autism
Andrew's Story- See Me
This is an excellent resource that can enable behavioural changes within health, social and clinical settings who support people with learning disabilities and autism.
County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and NHS County Durham CCG have jointly commissioned Mixit to produce this emotive and thought provoking awareness video (Click here to view). It focuses on Andrew's story and based on a serious incident that occurred at the University Hospital of north Durham. "Andrew lived with Down's Syndrome and came into hospital with a very bad UTI. However, he was not recovering from it and staff were not asking why. We wish for this case to be used as learning tool, to show that reasonable adjustments should be made for patients with disabilities and assumptions should not be made. This is the full length version of See Me - Andrew's Story. With thanks to Andrew's family and to local drama group Mixit for creating this video ".

As part of WSCC IPC champion programme, we are now pleased to offer a series of infection prevention and control (IPC) forums for staff members who have already completed the WSCC IPC champion training programme in recent years.
This is an opportunity to meet quarterly to update on current IPC headlines relating to local and national IPC practice and to keep the champions supported in their role. There will be a question and answer session with our IPC practitioner for those that have queries or support. This in an interactive forum so delegates should be able to speak freely about practice whilst talking through issues they may be facing and enable networking with colleagues from other organisations to share practice.
