Welcome to this special Jubilee newsletter. Below are some of the activities the Library Service is putting on to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. These are a mixture of activities for children, adults and families.
Our regular activities will continue to run and many of these will have a Jubilee theme. Many libraries are linking in with activities in their local communities too.
A special Jubilee page has been created to show how libraries are celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Over the bank holiday weekend, we will be open as usual on Saturday 4 June, and closed on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 of June.
Royal storytimes
Half term activities in our libraries will take a royal twist this month, with several libraries holding bookable story and craft events for families.
Check our list of free Royal Storytimes to see what’s taking place near you and don’t forget to book your place, as spaces are limited.
Afternoon Royal Tea
Join us at the library for tea and cake to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. No booking is required.
Libraries taking part are Bognor Regis, East Grinstead, Goring, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Littlehampton and Shoreham.
All dates and times can be found here.
Hunt the missing corgis!
How are your treasure-hunting skills? You’ll need them over the next fortnight, as we invite children to hunt around the library for eight missing corgis!
The Queen’s beloved dogs have escaped Buckingham Palace after one of the footmen left the gate open. They were last seen heading to the library…
Find all eight corgi posters and complete the answer sheet at your local library between Monday 23 May – Saturday 4 June* to be in with a chance of winning our prize draw.
*Excludes Thursday 2 June and Friday 3 June.
What have you picked for the Big Jubilee Read?
The Big Jubilee Read is a reading for pleasure campaign celebrating great reads from across the Commonwealth to coincide with Her Majesty The Queen’s Jubilee. An expert panel has chosen seventy titles with ten books for each decade of the Queen’s reign. The list offers brilliant, beautiful and thrilling writing to engage all readers in the discovery and celebration of great books.
Libraries will be displaying reads from the last seventy years and we are highlighting the Big Jubilee Reads via our Virtual Reading Group on Facebook.
There is also a special Jubilee podcast where library staff discuss their thoughts on some of the Jubilee reads.
Take a trip down memory lane
Many people will be marking the Jubilee with street parties and afternoon teas, reminiscing about times gone by. Did you know that reminiscence is a particularly good activity for those living with dementia?
Watch our special online Jubilee Reminiscence session [make sure you use an up-to-date browser eg Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge] as we explore a selection of objects from our Afternoon Tea reminiscence pack – just one of a large collection of dementia-friendly resources available for anyone to borrow for free from their local library.
We also have a small number of places left at our Royal Reminiscence Afternoon Tea event at Worthing Library, where you can join us for a cup of tea and cake as we take a trip down memory lane.
