Season's Greetings
Fill your stockings at the library
Did you know that many libraries are selling small Christmas gifts this year? We’re not just about lending books, you know…
You could pick up a stack of charity Christmas cards, or a stocking filler such as a 3D bookmark, activity book or giant pencil! Contact your local library to find out what's available.
If there’s no time to browse, shop from home instead and grab a bargain from the Online Booksale or the Local Publications catalogue [PDF, 3MB]. Any of these items can be ordered for collection at your local library.

Winter Mini Challenge
Did your child take part in the Summer Reading Challenge earlier this year? No need to let the winter weather freeze their love of reading, because the Wild World Heroes are back!
The Reading Agency is once again offering a Winter Mini Challenge – only available online. To take part, children need to read two or three books and leave a short review on the challenge website. Why not choose something from your local library and share your reviews with staff too?
The challenge runs from 1 December to 16 January – plenty of time to find out about the Arctic environment and maybe even spot a narwhal!

Supporting bereavement in our communities
Here in the library service, we recognise the impact grief can have on a person’s mental and physical health. To mark National Grief Awareness Week (2-8 December), we’re bringing attention to the vital support services in our community which the bereaved are often unaware of.
If someone you know is grieving right now, they are most welcome to stop for a chat with us at their local library. We can help them to find books on the subject, signpost to organisations who can support, or simply listen to their story.
Visit our Bereavement Support page to find out more.

Don’t get lost on your next weekend away
If you’re planning to do Christmas shopping in a different city this month, or you’ve got a staycation booked for the festive period, you’ll probably want to pack a map or guidebook!
Did you know that you can borrow Ordnance Survey maps from your local library? Or you might like a travel guide to help you decide where to go.
Browse the shelves at a West Sussex library near you, or search the library catalogue and reserve titles free of charge.

Remote Digital Support over Christmas
To give our brilliant volunteers a well-deserved break, the Remote Digital Support Service will not be running over the Christmas period. We close after Friday 17 December and will resume on Tuesday 4 January.
The Digital Support email inbox and phoneline - 0330 222 3455 - will not be monitored during this time. You are still welcome to send non-urgent emails, or leave a voicemail, and we'll reply as soon as possible in the new year.
We would like to thank everyone who has used the service in the last 12 months and we look forward to assisting with your digital queries in 2022!

Continue to take precautions in libraries
It’s important that we continue to take precautions and do all we can to reduce the spread of coronavirus and keep each other safe.
We are continuing to strongly advise all library staff, volunteers and customers to:
- not come into the library if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 or you have been advised to self-isolate
- wear a face covering in library buildings (unless exempt)
- respect social distancing and give others ample space
- make use of the hand sanitiser that is available upon entry to the library and throughout your visit
- provide your contact details for Test and Trace or ‘check in’ using the NHS COVID-19 App
- test regularly – order or pick up test kits from locations across the county, including some West Sussex libraries! Supervised tests are also available at local pharmacies. Find out more about COVID-19 testing on the West Sussex County Council website.
