A thank you message from Russell Allen
This Volunteers’ Week I would like to say a big thank you to all our wonderful Library Volunteers!
The coronavirus pandemic has rightly raised the profile of volunteering and more people than ever are aware of the immense contribution being made every day by the UK’s volunteers. Throughout the year, our library volunteers have continued to make a big difference to people and their communities.
This is why, on the 37th annual Volunteers’ Week (and Month of the Community) I would like to take the opportunity to recognise the contribution of all those who have continued to volunteer during coronavirus and also say a huge thank you to those who usually volunteer in our libraries but have not been able to resume their roles because of the pandemic.
Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you all in our libraries very soon!
Russell Allen - Head of Libraries and Heritage

Work on the new-look Worthing Library is almost complete and will be ready to open to customers on Tuesday 22 June, 9.00am. The temporary library at 37 Richmond Road will close at 4.30pm on Saturday 12 June so that equipment, books and other items can be moved back to the main library. Loan dates will be extended so that no items are due for return while the temporary library is closed, and customers will be able to reserve and renew items online and return loans to any other West Sussex library.
The custom-designed building will bring together West Sussex County Council Registration Services, Children and Family services, Find it Out and Youth Emotional Support services and an enhanced library service, all under one roof.
The fully refurbished building will feature:
- Flexible meeting rooms
- An inclusive Changing Places toilet on the ground floor
- A private meeting pod, Quiet Zone, study bar and personal study desks
- A suite of custom-designed Registration rooms
- A specialist antenatal room for midwifery clinic appointments
For all the latest updates, and to take a virtual walk-through of the library, visit our online guide.
