Pyramid for Safeguarding Provision

Welcome to E4S Spotlight!

2021 has got off to a rapid start, and a third lockdown demonstrates how important it is to have RSHE embedded across your curriculum to promote resilience and wellbeing.

In West Sussex, the E4S approach gives you a way to embed an enhanced RSHE curriculum to meet requirements and the provide universal layer in the Pyramid for Safeguarding Provision: Safeguarding in Education & E4S

During the first part of the spring term we have:

  • Facilitated live and recorded training on Planning & Implementing RSHE;
  • Created a free area on RSHE Statutory Status for all schools;
  • Created an E4S cornerstone overview area for all schools;
  • Created google forms for subscribing schools to consult with external stakeholders;
  • Added a detailed curriculum map across all cornerstones and year groups that you can download to further assist in planning the learning experiences;
  • Started developing further training courses, webinars and recording to be shared soon.

DfE Latest Update

The DfE released a statement just before half term regarding the timeline for statutory status and full teaching of RSHE.

It is still expected that schools may start fuller teaching of the RSHE Curriculum from April 2021 to ensure that students experience ‘some’ RSHE in the academic year of 2020/2021 but this will be a flexible and ongoing process.

The DfE acknowledge that schools ‘know their students best’ and will require some flexibility in how it is rolled out effectively in the first year of compulsory teaching.

You are encouraged to continue to take a phased approach (if needed) to the development and teaching of RSHE, prioritising the needs of your school community at this time, into September 2021 and through the academic year of 2021–2022.

The PSHE Association have shared a statement from DfE which clarifies their expectations of schools in relation to implementing statutory RSHE. You can read the full statement on the PSHE website

E4S & statutory expectations for RSHE

The initial size of the curriculum may seem daunting but using the E4S approach and understanding your pupils allows you to inflate and deflate the curriculum so it fits the needs of your school - just like a beach ball.

A new area has been added to the E4S Toolkit, to help you navigate through you statutory duties. It is free to access and it currently covers;

E4S & RSHE

E4S & Ofsted

E4S & Contextual Safeguarding

Coming soon are E4S & SEND, E4S & Faith Schools and E4S & Locality.

The 4 Cornerstones of E4S and wider contexts of a whole school approach

E4S is built around four key areas that are pertinent to wellbeing and resilience. Embedding the cornerstones in your school's curriculum will ensure that children and young people in West Sussex receive a universal level of understanding and knowledge.

In order to fully embed E4S via a whole school approach, we believe that a wider understanding of the cornerstones may be needed and embedded within policy, guidance and professional understanding. To assist schools in accessing everything they may need to consider, E4S has developed a new free area of the site that brings together an overarching level of information, advice and guidance. Thus area is call the E4S cornerstones overview hub.
