Picture Books

Together

Together by Jane Chapman ISBN: 9781788816793  £11.99

Hidden under shady leaves, a tiny face peeps out. Silent. Alone. But out in the world, friendship awaits. And there is joy to be found ... together. A calming soothing tale of feeling alone in the big wide world that is home and the importance of the kind and reassuring hand of friendship. Ideal for the new September intake.

Nightlights

Nightlights by Lorena Alvarez ISBN: 9781910620571  £8.99

This is an A4 comic strip story about a girl with a vivid imagination and a talent for illustration. The dark colour pallet of the illustrations create an atmospheric background to Sandy’s wild glowing imaginings, which she turns into drawings much to the disapproval of the nuns in school. One day, Morpie, a mysterious pale girl, appears at school and she knows all about Sandy's drawings. Things then take a surreal, slightly sinister turn. There is a moment when it seems as if daydreamer Sandy will get carried away by her imagination, but she finds the answer in the mathematics formula of Pi! 'Nightlights' is a beautiful story about fear, insecurity, and creativity with ideal for Key Stage 2.

Key Stage 2 Stories

The Vanishing Trick

The Vanishing Trick by Jenni Spangler ISBN:9781471190377  £6.99

Madame Augustina Pinchbeck, travels the country conjuring the spirits of dearly departed loved ones. Whilst her ability to contact ghosts is fake, she does use real magic of a sort. She persuades children to part with precious objects, promising to use her powers to help them but instead turns their items into enchanted Cabinets that bind the children to her and into which she can vanish and summon them at will. When Pinchbeck captures orphan Leander, events are set into motion that see him and his new friends Charlotte and Felix, in a race against time to break Pinchbeck's spell, before one of them vanishes forever.

This is a compelling page turning read for 9 years and above that will stay with the reader long after you have closed the book.

Wild Way Home

The Wild Way Home by Sophie Kirtley ISBN: 9781526616289 £6.99

Charlie is lost in her local forest having run away form a situation she has no control over. Her mother has just given birth to a longed for second child and brother for Charlie. But instead of being overjoyed, Charlie is afraid. Dara has a weak heart and Charlie recognises that her longed for baby brother may not survive the operation he needs to make him well. So she runs away in to the woods and finds herself in the Stone Age and saving the life of a hunter-gatherer Harby who seems equally distressed and lost. Together they attempt to find ‘home’ whatever that may be for each of them, and manage to teach each other a thing or two while they tackle the perils of life in the prehistoric forest. This is a thrilling, enchanting story with great characterisation, a contemporary theme and rich vocabulary. Ideal as a class read for year 5 and above.

Information Books

Whale Shark

Teeth to Tail: Whale Shark by Robin Twiddy ISBN: 9781786376138  £12.99

Did you know the whale shark can swallow 5,600 litres of water an hour when it feeds? Details such as this and the large colour photographs in this book will fascinate children, especially where a diver is included, as it is then clear just how huge these animals really are. The language is scientific without being too difficult to decode by a confident KS1 reader. Any difficult words are also spelt out phonetically. Technical words are highlighted and definitions included in the glossary. The pages are clearly laid out to showcase the photographs with short sentences above and below the images. Where captions and labelling are used, they enhance and inform, they do not obscure the pictures. Suitable for KS1 and lower KS2/reluctant readers.

Part of a series Teeth to Tail…..Great White Shark, Hammerhead Shark, Tiger Shark

Why do i sneeze?

Why Do I Sneeze? By Madeline Tyler ISBN: 9781789980455 £7.99

This is a brightly illustrated non-fiction book from Book Life publishers. The illustrations are bold and simply drawn but they convey a clear message that complements the short factual text on each page. In this book we learn all about snot, sneezes and spreading diseases, a very timely publication to support school staff in addressing the necessity for hand and face hygiene.

The text is accessible for a good reader in KS1, whilst containing enough nuggets of information to support lower KS2 studies. There are captions on each page adding an extra fact or two, whilst scientific language is emboldened in the text to draw the reader’s attention. Definitions of these words are included in the glossary.

Part of a series Why Do I… Bleed, Dribble, Grow, Itch, Poo
