Consultation on Ofsted Fees - Early years childcare fees regulations

The aim of this consultation is to seek views on a proposed increase to the application fee and annual fee paid to Ofsted by early years providers on Ofsted's Early Years Register, with a view of changes coming into force from April 2020.

The Department for Education are also seeking views on the principles that should underpin a revised Early Years Register fee model to be introduced from April 2021.

This consultation closes at 10am on 9 October 2019. The survey can be found here.

Pacey Childminding Survey

PACEY has commissioned the University of Plymouth to conduct a survey aimed at everyone who cares about the sustainability of childminding. This includes current, former and prospective childminders, local authorities and other organisations that work closely with childminders. They would be very grateful if you and any interested colleagues would fill out the survey.

The survey is available online at: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Childminding2019 . If you have any questions concerning the survey, please contact Dr Verity Campbell-Barr at the University of Plymouth (verity.campbell-barr@plymouth.ac.uk).

Cry-Sis Sleep Support

Cry-Sis are a UK charity offering help and support to parents with babies who cry excessively or have sleeping problems.

On a review of advice that they provide to parents on their website, concerns were raised that this information did not support safer sleep advice and encourages a method of sleep training which conflicts with what we know promotes healthy brain development.

Evidence shows that a baby who is not responded to when they cry has worryingly high cortisol levels which can harm their brain development. Using the method promoted by Cry-Sis has the potential to ‘train’ the baby to no longer cry but, research shows that the now non-crying baby has the same damaging level of cortisol as the baby who cries.

Family Assist raised these concerns with our Midwifery, Early Years and Health Visiting colleagues and the decision has been made to no longer refer parents to Cry-Sis for information and we would encourage you to instead refer families to the information held on Family Assist regarding Safer Sleep.

The Institute of Health Visitors provide information on promoting healthy sleep routines however this is currently undergoing an internal review. When this has been completed and the information is made available again, Family Assist will create a dedicated article supporting this advice for further dissemination.
