Autumn Volunteer Newsletter

Welcome to Chris Broggi - Principal Librarian Volunteering

Volunteer logo

We would like to welcome Chris Broggi who has recently been appointed as Principal Librarian Volunteering to oversee and co-ordinate the volunteering programme for West Sussex Library Service. Chris was previously a Library Manager in the Bognor area managing a team of staff and volunteers and has also worked in the voluntary sector in a variety of volunteer related roles. Chris is looking forward to visiting libraries throughout September/October to meet staff and volunteers to identify her priorities for the year ahead, including how we effectively engage and communicate with volunteers in our organisation.

If you have any suggestions or comments about your volunteer role or volunteering for West Sussex Library Service that you would like to discuss or put forward, Chris can be contacted via email at Christine.broggi@westsussex.gov.uk.

Would you like to help by writing a book review?

Book

Do you love books and want to share them with others?

Would you like to write a book review?

We are currently trying to increase the number of book reviews that we share with our customers and would love our volunteers to get involved. We are looking for brief reviews that can be used in newsletters, shared with reading groups and used online. In time to come we will also be looking to see how we can display reviews effectively within our libraries. The review needs to include the title and author details, and rather than relaying the plot should briefly set the scene about what the book is about and then go on to say why you liked it so much. Reviews should be no more than 100 words but could be as little as a few lines long. Please make sure that any book that you choose to recommend is in stock on our catalogue, it doesn’t matter if it is fiction, non-fiction or a children’s book, it just needs to be available.

If you would like to be involved, please either email your reviews to Katie.Gledhill@westsussex.gov.uk or put a typed copy on the van to Worthing Library, FAO Katie Gledhill.  We look forward to sharing your favourite reads.

Reading Friends Project

reading friends

Are you a Home Library Direct volunteer who uses Crawley, Broadfield, Worthing, Broadwater, Durrington, Goring, Findon Valley, Billingshurst, Henfield, Horsham, Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning or Southwater libraries?

Would you like to take part in a national project aiming to reduce loneliness and isolation amongst older people and people with dementia and their carers?

Reading Friends is a national project run by an organisation called The Reading Agency, which has received Big Lottery funding to work with libraries and voluntary organisations to befriend older and isolated people through talking about books and reading.

As you are already taking books and audiobooks to someone who may feel isolated and lonely, this would be an ideal opportunity to enhance your visit by spending time talking about books and authors and seeing where else your conversation takes you. Or maybe the person you are visiting would like you to read to them and you would enjoy doing that?

If this sounds interesting and you would like to find out more, please email jackie.manners@westsussex.gov.uk
