Better, more flexible options for discount parking
We've improved our flexible discounts for people who use our car parks regularly, but not frequently or predictably enough to benefit from a season ticket.
You can now buy a batch of 10 day session vouchers, which we've reduced from the previous minimum purchase of 100 days, for £48.60. This is based on your feedback to provide a more versatile range of options for different people's needs.
It means you only pay £4.86 per day for tickets that you can use on different days, and with different vehicles, valid for 24 hours. It's intended for occasional all-day parking and much cheaper than our standard all-day tariff (£8 at most sites).
You can use them at 10 of our off-street car parks across Wokingham town, Woodley, Twyford, Earley and Wargrave - and now this also includes Winnersh, Coppid Beech and Thames Valley park and rides.
You use each day through our online platform, with no need to use ticket machines or the RingGo app - just enter your registration number each time.
If you're planning to park more often, or want to come and go throughout the day, our one, three, six and 12-month season tickets can be used at the same 10 sites and also offer substantially better value than the all-day rate.
Find any of our off-street car parks in the borough using our website, which has opening hours, parking fees and more, or on the RingGo locator map. You can also see all parking services including blue badge applications.
Help us create safer streets across the borough
We want to improve road safety across the borough, so we're asking for your views on five areas where we're proposing lower speed limits.
We adopted a new speed limit policy in January, and over the spring we asked you which roads and areas should be prioritised initially.
We received 1,911 suggestions from 841 participants, as well as responses from town and parish councils. The areas, identified after careful assessment, are:
-
Wokingham town centre and Norreys Avenue - new 20mph limits
-
Twyford village centre and surrounding residential area - new 20mph and 30mph limits
-
Finchampstead village - new 20mph limit
-
Silverdale Road and adjacent streets, Earley - new 20mph limits
-
Rural roads around Hare Hatch - new 30mph limits
These proposals are being put forward as the first phase of a longer programme, with other areas to be considered and prioritised in future.
We're proposing many of the new limits on roads where that speed is already close to the natural way people drive, and this is not a blanket approach.
Lower speed limits can also make it safer and more attractive to walk, wheel and cycle, which is healthier and better for the environment that driving.
VIDEO: Don't take a punt on risky driving
When you're distracted or in a hurry while you're out and about on the roads, you might be tempted to ignore some of the rules.
But they exist for a reason, and you could severely harm yourself or others if you break them for even a split-second.
You could also wind up in serious trouble and be fined or even lose your licence if you end up with enough penalty points.
Our latest video campaign highlights the dangers of being distracted by your phone, not wearing your seatbelt or rushing if you're running late.
They're funny to watch but the message is serious: it's not worth taking silly risks.
When we consulted on our long-term transport strategy in 2023 and 2024, many of you told us that speeding in built-up and rural areas was a major concern. Our Safer Streets scheme is part of an ongoing effort to address this.
Traffic measures across village under review
We know there's been congestion at Arborfield Cross and other areas in recent weeks, largely due to the ongoing Thames Water works in and around Barkham.
This has diverted extra traffic onto Sindlesham Road and Mole Road, which has caused frustrating delays and we're thankful for your continued patience.
Some people have asked us to remove the remaining "give way" chicane on Sindlesham Road to ease queuing and we've reviewed this idea carefully, alongside other possible short-term measures.
While the chicane can contribute to queuing at busy times, removing it risks increasing vehicle speeds when it's quieter. This could affect everyone's safety over the longer term, whereas additional traffic from Thames Water's works is temporary.
We'll be leaving it in place while we complete a wider review of how we manage traffic through Arborfield Cross, as explained below. We'll keep monitoring the situation and investigate any measures that could safely improve your journeys.
Two chicanes were temporarily removed from Eversley Road and Sindlesham Road this summer, to prevent gridlocking of roundabouts, and we'll let you know about any further proposals for these.
Looking at the whole picture for long-term solutions
As nearby communities have continued to grow in recent years, we've installed a range of traffic calming measures in and around Arborfield village.
These aimed to reduce vehicle speeds and encourage passing traffic to use the Observer Way relief road, above, instead of Reading Road and Eversley Road.
Our options were limited and all involved compromises, but the scheme has achieved both these goals and passed numerous independent safety reviews.
Some issues are still being raised with us, although the police have generally attributed these to driver behaviour rather than the road design.
However, to address your concerns, we're reviewing all measures including traffic calming, speed limits and usage by heavy goods vehicles.
This needs time to complete thoroughly, to ensure we keep the benefits without introducing new or different problems. You'll have a chance to comment on any recommendations that come forward.
Thames Water's works will move to their next phase on Barkham Road, between Barkham Street and Barkham Bridge, tomorrow (Friday, 16 October), with access restored east of Barkham Street. This is seven weeks ahead of schedule after we worked with them to progress the scheme faster.
Bridge repaired and reopened earlier than expected
We've successfully completed our repairs to the damaged humpback bridge on Church Road in Swallowfield 24 hours ahead of schedule.
It reopened at the end of the working day last Thursday (8 October) after operating with temporary lights and barriers for much of this year.
As part of these works, we also repaired some damage on the carriageway with a new and more efficient technique (see video) that we're trialling.
The bridge was damaged when a lorry collided with it in February but we were able to reopen it shortly afterwards, after quickly carrying out detailed checks to ensure it was still structurally safe.
The driver has since been convicted of a motoring offence and we're in contact with the company's insurers to discuss recovering our costs.
In case you missed it, we're closing the footbridge over the railway and A3290 between Earley station and Woodley from Monday (19 October) until next April. This is for essential maintenance so we can keep the existing route open while looking into alternative long-term options with landowners and others.
 Upcoming roadworks
We think these works will be the most disruptive, but you can see a list of all upcoming works in your area or browse our interactive map.
