St Paul’s pupils take steps towards victory
Congratulations to St Paul's Church of England Junior School, who won this year's Wokingham Walk to School Week trophy.
The school in Oxford Road, Wokingham, achieved 1,295 journeys by walking, cycling or wheeling, the highest number of all schools taking part.
Almost the entire school was involved in the initiative, which ran from 18 to 22 May, with active journeys making up 71 per cent of all trips.
The trophy was presented at a special assembly and they'll keep it for a year.
Further challenges await during Walktober
Next month marks the start of the annual Walktober challenge, held each October to celebrate International Walk to School Month.
School communities are asked to walk, wheel and use other active and sustainable travel as much as possible throughout the month.
Primary schools will receive wall charts and activity cards to help track progress and encourage participation, and secondary school will receive stamp cards.
There are fantastic prizes up for grabs for both schools and pupils, so give it a go - you might even discover some fun new routes along the way.
Pupils at primary schools across Wokingham Borough are being encouraged to come up with their own road safety slogan for a competition organised by our maintenance partners at VolkerHighways. Enter before Friday 2 October.

Posters warn drivers not to idle engines
We've announced the five winners of this year's anti-idling competition in partnership with Volker Highways, the council's highways maintenance partner.
It's so easy to switch off your engine when you're waiting outside a school and it makes all the difference to air quality in that area.
Even better, you can reduce the number of car trips by getting there in a more environmentally friendly way, which is also much healthier.
New research suggests that as little as 11 minutes of activity per day can reduce your risk of early death by 23 per cent.
The competition winners are:
-
Immy at Evendons Primary School, Wokingham
-
Alex at The Coombes Primary School, Arborfield
-
Emilia at Westende Junior School, Wokingham
-
Archie and Florence at Nine Mile Ride Primary School, Finchampstead
They'll each receive a £50 book voucher and the banners will be proudly displayed outside their four schools.
Cycle to School Week, which starts on Monday 5 October, is a fantastic opportunity for pupils, parents and schools to discover how cycling can become part of everyday life. Contact us if you would like to take part.
Twyford train station hosts active travel event
We've launched a new leaflet to show people how to travel more sustainably to Twyford station, which we handed out at a recent event on site.
The leaflet shows walking and cycling distances on a map, with links to bus timetables and other useful information promoting alternatives to driving.
We also listened to cyclists' concerns about the lack of an off-road option between Woodley and Twyford and will take these into consideration.
Our team gave out advice on active travel more generally while Dr Bike carried out free safety checks and repairs on people's bicycles.
Several belonged to students who cycle to The Piggott School in Wargrave, and we even gave remote advice to a commuter who had left her folding bike in London!
This was another great chance to hear what people think, give out some helpful advice and offer practical support to keep people cycling safely.
Family fun day brings community together
More than 150 visitors stopped by our stall at Arborfield and Barkham Parish Council's recent family fun day
We chatted with them to give advice and handed out leaflets, and they were able to play our spinning prize wheel or enjoy a ride on our smoothie bike.
A popular fixture at events all year round, this allows riders to make a pedal-powered drink while feeling the benefits of riding.
Dr Bike checked and adjusted 15 bikes throughout the day, including 10 adult bikes and five children's bikes, helping to ensure they were safe to ride.
The Move for 10 Challenge, run by This Girl Can, encourages women to complete just 10 minutes of movement, 10 times over a month. It's designed to fit around busy lifestyles and all movement counts, so it's a simple way to build healthier habits and feel better day to day.
