 Station footbridge to shut for essential maintenance
We’ll be closing the footbridge near Earley station, which crosses the railway and A3290, for refurbishment from mid-October until next April.
We’ll let you know the exact start dates nearer the time.
While there are no safety concerns, we need to refurbish parts of this early 1970s structure to maintain its condition and extend its working life.
Once we start, we’ll be shutting the station car park for use as a site compound, though the parcel collection and charity drop boxes will remain accessible.
We’ll be replacing the footbridge ramps to the same dimensions as before, but with steel steps instead of concrete ones on either side.
The nearest alternative crossing will be the underpass at Henley Wood Road, or cross the railway at Mays Lane and then the A3290 at Church Road.
We’ve kept Earley Town Council informed while planning this and will mostly be working during the daytime to minimise disruption.
However, some overnight working will be necessary when works are taking place above the railway and the A3290.
Noise will be continually monitored to ensure it isn’t excessive, and we’ve timed the works to fall outside the bird nesting season.
Don't forget the M4 is closing in both directions from 9pm on Friday 18 September to 6am on Monday 21 September, with a diversion through the borough. Hatch Farm Way in Winnersh will also close. SSEN are restringing high-voltage cables after a pylon was hit by a tree earlier this year.
 Bus routes temporarily changing for water works
Thames Water will be shutting Barkham Road in stages from Monday 14 September until June 2027 as they continue to upgrade pipes serving the Arborfield area.
Until 13 November, the Leopard 3 bus service will divert via Langley Common Road, Barkham Street, Barkham Ride, Finchampstead Road and Wokingham town centre.
Residents on Nine Mile Ride will need to use footpaths through California Country Park, Gorse Ride North and South, and along Finchampstead Road to reach the bus stops on Barkham Ride.
Thames Water are also finalising arrangements with Reading Buses for a temporary shuttle service between Barkham Road and Wokingham. The final timetable will appear on Reading Buses' website.
For journeys to Reading, passengers will be able to travel towards Wokingham on the shuttle and then change to the Leopard 3 on Finchampstead Road.
Alternatively, they can use the walking route through the works area to reach either side of the closure. This will be safely maintained at all times.
 Water mains upgrade requires closures around village
There'll be closures and diversions on roads in the Hare Hatch area for the next few months while Thames Water carry out essential upgrades to a mains pipe.
The closure will begin on Tag Lane in early October (date to be finalised) and will proceed to Blakes Road, between Tag Lane and Victoria Road, in November.
The works are expected to run until Friday, 26 February 2027.

Gas works to wrap up in less than a month
SGN's gas main upgrade works on Milton Road, Wokingham, are on track to finish by the end of September.
From Monday 7 September, SGN will remove the current road closure and install multi-way temporary traffic signals at the Milton Road and Glebelands Road roundabout to carry out a gas connection.
These will be in place for about a week, before work moves into the final phase. Milton Road will then be closed between Glebelands Road and Bird Mews, with access for residents and properties only.
The scheme is set to finish by Friday 25 September. It's part of SGN's programme to upgrade gas pipes, ensuring a safe and reliable supply for years to come.

 A4 bus lane proposal moves to next steps
Now we're consulting on a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) that proposes introducing two westbound bus lanes on London Road, including sections near Suttons Seeds Roundabout and between the A3290 slip roads.
These would operate at all times and be available to buses, Dial-a-Ride buses, pedal cycles and taxis. The aim is to help buses travel more reliably along this busy route by providing dedicated road space.
This latest consultation offers the opportunity to raise any traffic management concerns like the impact on road safety, traffic flow or access to properties. It's open until Thursday 24 September.
We're working in partnership with Reading Borough Council on this, and we've both received Government funding for bus improvements. This has paid for the work so far and will fund the proposed scheme.

 Cycle training for a healthy new generation
During the 2025/26 academic year, some 2,440 children at 47 schools in the borough learned to ride or improve their technique through Bikeability training.
This was provided by My Journey Wokingham and their partners at Avanti Cycling, and included a series of summer holiday courses.
They provide Bikeability cycle training at three levels:

Level 1 - Basic bike handling skills in a traffic‑free environment

Level 2 - On‑road cycling on quiet local streets

Level 3 - Advanced cycling skills on busier roads and complex junctions
We're one of the best-performing councils when it comes to uptake, with almost 80 per cent of Year 6 children taking part.
This year we doubled the number of Level 3 sessions and introduced more informal fun sessions which prepare Year 4 children for Bikeability.
Pupils at Wokingham Borough primary schools have just over a week to take part in our My Journey Wokingham team's anti-idling poster competition, which is accepting entries until next Friday (11 September).

We'll be setting up temporary two-way lights between Old Forest Road and Emmbrook Road while we repair a carriageway.
