Welcome to your Summer Update CAN Network News
Hello! There are a couple of updates we wanted to share with you since our summer newsletter came out a few weeks ago.
- Firstly, Building for the Future have a new booking system and a new name for their ability hub, opening this August, with more details below.
- Secondly, since our last newsletter we have been told that Stand out for Autism's family quiet swim sessions are unfortunately no longer running.
We have also brought together a list of local paddling pools and splash pads, including free, low cost, and walk-up options to offer greater access for those of our families who need to keep planning flexible.
We hope you all have a wonderful summer.
Also, if you missed our main summer newsletter, packed with accessible activities and ideas for the holidays you can access it here.
The Tree House stay and play sessions
As this newsletter goes out, our friends at Building for the Future are putting the finishing touches to their brand new SEND activity hub. The hub also has a new name: The Tree House.
They have been overwhelmed by the interest so far and are looking forward to welcoming families into the new space.
In order to help manage the high level of demand and ensure a safe, welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone, all families are now asked to book their place before attending a stay and play session.
To book a place, please email with:
- The date of the stay and play session you would like to attend.
- The number of adults attending.
- The number of children attending.
Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and your booking will only be confirmed once you have received confirmation from them.
 A splashing time for all
Splash pads
Free splash pads are an easy, accessible way for some sensory water fun. Splash pads and zones are also often more on the level, so allow better access for our children and young people who use mobility aids. Click on the links below to find the best fit for your family.
Jocks Lane Park has a splash pad open until early September, daily from 10am to 5pm. There is free parking and an onsite café with toilet facilities open during peak times.
Great Hollands recreation ground has a splash pad open until early September, daily from 10am to 5pm.
Splash zones in local attractions
Remember you can use your CAN card for a carer’s ticket at Wellington Country Park all this summer, where their Splash Zone is open 10.30am to 5pm each day.
Our CAN card friends Beale Wildlife Park Beale Wildlife Park have had a few problems with their splash pool resulting in a temporary closure. However, they hope to have the splash pool up and running again soon. Please check their website for updates and they suggest ringing on the morning of your visit to double check.
Local paddling pools
California Country Park's paddling pool is now open, with booking online.
Woodford Park in Woodley and Christchurch Meadows in Reading have paddling pools which are free to use, without booking. This can be great for trying out paddling without time pressure, or paying for a ticket/timeslot your child may not be able to use when the day comes.
