First phase of cycle track nears completion
We'll soon be wrapping up the first phase of our new active travel route between Woodley precinct and Palmer Park in Reading.
On Monday 27 July, our teams will be moving the closure points on Woodlands Avenue to between Bulmershe School entrance and just east of Fairwater Drive.
This is to finish installing a segregated cycle track along the northern side of Woodlands Avenue, between the school and the precinct.
We apologise for any disruption during these works, which we timed to take place during the school holidays to minimise the impact.
We're expecting to finish by Monday 31 August, at which point the team will move to the second phase of works on Church Road.
The current closure is between Crockhamwell Road and just west of Lytham Road.
 Looking ahead - what's coming next
This scheme includes improvements on parts of Church Road and Culver Lane, with new crossings, sections of cycle track and more.
We're expecting closures and diversions at the junction of Church Road and Woodlands Avenue for much of September while we make these changes.
Works on Culver Lane will then take place during the winter. We're still confirming final dates for all of this, so watch this space for the latest updates.
Subject to final checks, the cycle track on Woodlands Avenue should be open for everyone to use once works finish at the end of August.
There won't be a track along the western half of Woodlands Avenue, as you told us during consultation that the existing shared paths were working well.
We won't be physically changing Palmerstone Road, which is also part of the route. However, subject to statutory consultation, we're planning a 20mph speed limit.
The Woodley to Reading scheme is funded by Active Travel England and is part of our vision to improve walking and cycling links in the borough, subject to funding. When we consulted on our wider transport strategy, people expressed strong support for making active travel more accessible.
 Pupils' green travel ideas win prizes
Fancy commuting by solar-powered travelator, a hover-jetski, or a skateboard that turns into a pogo stick? These were just some of the creative entries into our My Journey Wokingham team's art competition for Earth Day 2026.
Pupils at schools across the borough designed an environmentally friendly and futuristic way of getting around. Almost 200 children entered, and the winners and runners-up were awarded prizes.
All year round, My Journey Wokingham work to inspire children and their families to travel more sustainably. It's part of our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of transport and help everyone live healthier lifestyles.
Whether you want to walk, cycle, take the bus or train or even switch to an electric vehicle, there are loads of free resources on the My Journey website including guides, maps, interactive planners and a list of local events.
 Have your say on how you get around
You've still got time to have your say on several areas where we're looking to improve our borough's highways network.
Firstly, as part of the Woodley to Reading active travel route (above), we want to hear your views on the parking restrictions we're trialling on Woodlands Avenue.
You can tell us your thoughts on the first and second sections where we've introduced them on a time-limited, experimental basis.
We're also consulting on proposals for 16 new locations for cameras to help us monitor and enforce the rules of the road, to keep everyone safe.
Since we took charge of enforcing moving traffic offences in 2023, the number of recorded incidents has massively decreased.
We recently finished consulting on proposals to reduce speed limits to 20mph or 30mph on various streets. See our Engage platform for more.
We want to keep everyone safe while out and about as part of our emerging Safer Streets scheme, which is guided by the speed limit policy we agreed earlier this year. We'll announce the next steps in due course.
 Overnight closures for resurfacing works
As part of our annual roads and footways maintenance, we're continuing to resurface streets across the borough this summer.
There'll be overnight closures at several locations, rather than being done during the daytime, because more extensive works are required.
You can check our live listings to see when these are planned - and don't forget dates and times can change at short notice as they're highly weather dependent.
If your street is due for any maintenance works, keep checking nearer the time.
Resurfacing (see video) isn't always the most appropriate treatment and it's also the most expensive, so we also have several cost-effective alternatives.
These treatments, including surface dressing (see video) and retexturing, allow us to invest our limited resources where they'll make the biggest difference.

On top of our planned maintenance, we inspect our network throughout the year and fix any faults that meet our threshold for action. We also inspect any faults that you report and act where it's legally needed to keep you safe.

Another parking scam targeting residents
We recently warned you about scammers sending fraudulent texts where they claim to be us and demand payment for a non-existing parking fine.
Since then, we've heard reports of another scam which claims to be from the RingGo app and asks you to pay an outstanding balance.
While you can pay for your parking using RingGo, the app does not contact users in this way and you should delete any messages like this.
Don't follow any links and don't give any details under any circumstances. Check out this update from RingGo for more or check the official advice.

Temporary lights - Elm Road
Monday 20 to Wednesday 22 July
There'll be two-way lights near the junction with Elm Lane while SSE repair a defect.
Winnersh
Road closure - Arbor Lane
Thursday 23 and Friday 24 July
The road will be closed between Barley Gardens and Arbor Close while BT carry out fibre optic works.
Motorway closure now in effect
On top of the closures we've agreed, the eastbound M4 towards London is closed overnight (9pm - 6am) on weeknights until next Friday (25 July).
The closure, which is for surface maintenance, is between Junction 11 (Three Mile Cross) and Junction 10 (Winnersh) with a diversion in place.
Any works on motorways are approved and carried out by National Highways.
