Assemblies inspire pupils to tackle air pollution
We celebrated Clean Air Day with a series of talks at Shinfield Primary School, and Windmill Primary School and Evendons Primary School in Wokingham.
The sessions highlighted the importance of clean air and how air pollution, which exhaust fumes are a major contributor to, impacts our physical and mental health.
Pupils were eager to get involved, asking thoughtful questions and taking part in discussions about different types of air pollution and how these affect their lives.
We also hosted air quality workshops for selected pupils to explore the topic in more depth using air quality monitors, having discussions and sharing ideas.
This empowered them to become ambassadors for clean air within their school communities, encouraging people to consider alternatives to driving.
Getting creative to stop engine idling
Pupils were also delighted to welcome Kerby (above) from Volker Highways, who helps care for our borough's roads, pavements, and street lighting.
He invited them to design an anti-idling poster and slogan about the negative environmental and health impacts of vehicle idling near schools.
There'll be five winners, whose designs will be added to a banner and displayed at their school gates. They'll also win a £50 book voucher each
Find out more about taking part on our website. Entry is free, and we encourage all pupils to get involved and share their creative ideas for a cleaner future.
Reading Buses have agreed a special offer with Reading Borough Council for £4 park & ride returns for a limited period. On buses from Winnersh Triangle Park & Ride and Mereoak Park & Ride, this also includes parking!
 Helping commuters make sustainable choices
We celebrated Better Transport Week by greeting commuters at Wokingham station with free advice and resources on travelling more sustainably.
Visitors were invited to take part in a fun ‘spin wheel’ game, with prizes available, and take advantage of walking maps, cycle route guides and bus timetables.
The event sparked great interest, with many people keen to learn more about how they could improve their journeys to work and school.
We were pleased to show people how easy it is to make simple changes - and you can check out our website for free resources including a journey planner.
Pedal-powered smoothie machine is a hit at summer fete
We were also out in the community at the Winnersh Summer Fete, where we chatted to residents about what we do and how they can make a difference.
Visitors enjoyed rides on our smoothie bike, which drew a lot of interest, and were rewarded with their own healthy pedal-powered drink afterwards.
People were asking about local road and pathway developments and we explained the walking and cycling connections between local communities, helping residents better understand their travel options.
About 100 spoke to us throughout the day and Dr Bike was carrying out free checks to help people continue riding safely.
Dr Bike will be carrying out free bike checks on Saturday, 11 July. In the morning he will be at Shinfield (book now) in the afternoon Arborfield (book now). Dr Bike will diagnose any issues, carry out minor repairs where possible and help get you back on the road safely.
